Splitting T3

Hi everyone,

For those who split their T3 dosing, how do you go about this? Is it equal amounts throughout the day or a larger amount in the morning?

I take T3 only, but take it all in one go in the morning so I am of no help. My son is new on this T3 only journey and is currently splitting 10mcg AM and 10mcg early afternoon as he titrates up. I’m just not sure how to advise him where and when to add the next 5mcg increment.

thank you!

tagging greygoose as she has the best experience to help, I’ve split in combination with T4 but not relevant to you.

I've never split my dose of T3. I take a high dose because of a certain degree of resistance to thyroid hormone, and it has to be taken all in one go to actually do anything. Splitting the dose in my case would be pretty much as if I weren't taking any.

Msmustang, you have to find out the best way to do it for you as an individual by trial and error. There is no wrong or right way, just the way that suits you. :)

I haven't received my t3 yet and have a longer plan to start very low and slow... But my endo told me how and when to take it even though I won't even reach two doses for weeks.

He said first dose with levo, second dose at noon but try and leave an hour before eating.

Thanks for the reply. We don’t take Levo, just T3 only. Did he say to split the first dose and second dose evenly?

He did but also said pills rarely split perfectly and not to worry about that.

I split mine 15mcg first thing in the morning, 10 mcg an hour before lunch or early afternoon depending on my schedule, 10 mcg in the evening. Taking it all in one go made me feel over-medicated, as did taking 20 / 10 / 10.

As you can see from the replies, not everyone's the same so it's often a case of trial and course correction.

Just make sure he only has water for an hour before or after taking his medication.

Thank you! And how did you work up to that dose via splitting? Did you add more to the morning dose first and then start adding more to the afternoon doses later?

I started being stable on 10 mcg morning and evening then adding in another 10 mcg during the day. The endo suggested increasing the morning dose to 20 mcg but that was too much so I dropped it back to 15 mcg. It really is trial and course correction and unfortunately your son will have to work out what works for him.
