Hi,I have posted on here a few times and always received sound advice. I have had an overactive thyroid for over 15years and in June 2024 I developed a multi nodules goitre and my carbinmazole was increased to 40mg daily.I had two ultrasound scans which confirmed the nodules were benign. Here are my results from June 24 to date:
4/6/24 TSH 0.01 T4 37.2
7/7/24 TSH 0.01 T4 39.5 T3 17.3
20/9/24 TSH 0.01 T4 17.4
27/11/24 TSH 0.01 T4 15.8
28/2/25 TSH 0.01 T4 17.2
I haven't as yet spoken to my GP about the latest results as yet.
I don't understand why the T4 levels are rising again. I'm still taking 40mg Carbinmazole and i honestly thought my symptoms were improving. I would be very grateful for any advice, explanation, or suggestions.
Many thanks.

Thank you pennyannie for your response. I haven't been diagnosed with Graves and it's never been mentioned.
I'm feeling that the hyper symptoms have improved with just occasional raised heart beat , palpitations and sweating. My weight has recovered from the loss I experienced last year. The only other thing that's different is my lack of energy, feeling tired and very cold a lot , sometimes struggling to get to sleep or waking and getting up in the early hours of the morning. A bit of a mixed bag really.
Well that reads as though you are likely now experiencing hypothyroid symptoms - and that your T4 and especially your T3 now sitting too low in the ranges -
so maybe the AT drug needs adjusting down to allow more of your own natural thyroid hormones to be released into your blood stream and raise both your T3 and T4 :
It's impossible to say from such little information -
When metabolism runs too fast as in hyper type symptoms - or too slow as in hypo type symptoms the body struggles to extract key nutrients from your food no matter how well and clean you eat -
so I think you should also ask that your core strength vitamins and minerals be run - ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D to see if these are non optimal - which we can advise on when we see the results as these alone can compound your ill health further than necessary.
Thyroid UK - thyroiduk.org is the charity who supports this patient to patient open forum and you'll find on their website a very thorough list of both hyper and hypo symptoms that you can tick box to help identify where you now find yourself -
maybe print off the list to help you focus at appointment - but without seeing a T3 reading and both a T3 and T4 range - both drawn from the same blood test - it's difficult to say much more.
You can also find on the Thyroid UK website a full page of private blood companies who will the necessary blood tests for you if your doctor not able to :
Thank you Pennyannie. I will definitely look at the links you sent me. Hopefully I can gain better insight for when I speak with my doctor. Unfortunately I find doctors tend to look at the levels and not the symptoms . Thank you for all your help as always.
Thank you for your response SlowDragon. I will definitely have a look into the private blood tests and l at the links you've given me. I have never been instructed to fast before a blood test or given an early appointment. Vitamin D hasn't been tested but the others you mentioned have and are at normal levels. I take Vitamin B complex,Primrose oil ,Glucosamine and CoQ10 every morning.
Remember you must stop any supplements containing biotin 3-5 days before all blood tests
That includes vitamin B complex
In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70
Please add actual results and ranges for ferritin, folate and B12
T3 levels 17 3 which last test July24 Thank you SlowDragon for the information on pre test instruction which I shall adhere to before my next blood test.
I have the same thing on the same tablets my liver has enlarged. Just wondering if you have the same issue I am diagnosed with graves and weight has gone up bad. Thinking of going off them
Thank you Suttie1 I sympathize with you having Graves,it must be awful for you. And the carbinmazole don't help but I hope you speak to your doctor first before stopping them. I haven't got Graves or liver problems but a very fiery overactive thyroid with multiple nodules. Thyroid problems seem to be such a minefield which makes it hard to deal with and most people are unsympathetic because they don't understand what the sufferers are going through. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.
My weight drops dramatically when my thyroid level drops. The carbinmazole dose helps in trying to reach a normality. When this happens my weight recovers but doesn't increase. Maybe if you speak with your doctor they might have to adjust the dose down. Have you had your levels checked recently?
