My partner was diagnosed with Graves when he was 25. He had a total thyroidectomy and multiple eye surgeries due swelling in his eyes.
He has struggled with his appearance ever since (34 now) as he just want his old eyes back.
Are there any other men in this group that have and advice or would be happy to talk to him about their experience and how they are dealing with it?
He has said he will go to therapy but only if I can find someone that has been through the exact same thing as him...so if anyone knows of any therapists with Graves in the UK thag would be great!
I try to be supportive but im struggling to continue when this cycle keeps coming around!

My eyes were not considered ' bad enough ' for any treatment - I'm post RAI thyroid ablation for Graves - and I'm afraid I found no understanding of Graves Disease within mainstream medical and have just had to get on with ' things ' myself.
Living alone the burden was mostly all mine - but writing on this forum has helped me straighten myself out a bit and I know I've helped myself by helping others - ??
It might be worth looking at the Thyroid Eye Disease Charitable Trust - tedct.org.uk
You have actually a duplicate post running on the Graves Disease forum -
there is no one there - as we are all over here the on Thyroid UK forum - as we need to maximise our knowledge and of all the treatment options available for the treatment of primary hypothyroidism,
Maybe delete the duplicate post - as we have started a conversation here ?
Strongly recommend your partner creates a login here, or uses yours if he’s uncertain, and does some keyword searching.
This forum is filled with fellow thyroid folks, and although yes there are more hypo than hyper, you’ll find no smarter online resource.
Many of us get irreplaceable peace of mind and comfort and knowledge from just reading other people’s posts, whether we have a question or just are feeling down from the impact of it all.
You can find relevant posts through a simple web search, putting this into your browser url:
Copy/paste the entire line - not just the part that’s hyperlinking.
This site’s built in search is a little lacking. But if you add “site:” before the website address, and a space followed by your search term after, you can use Google or any other browser to search a single sites content.
So the above link takes you to posts that mention graves, and the below ones that mention TED:
So even if he’s non-committal, being a passive reader on the board can have huge benefits in combatting the loneliness of this struggle. We all feel it at times, no one but those with thyroid issues can actually understand what it’s like. So it’s a godsend to have this online community. I hope he can at least take a read!
