Hi, I have had hashimotos for many years and have recently been told I have a high blood calcium score. I have looked online about this and have found suggestions that this could be your do with the parathyroid glands. I wondered if this could be related to hashimotos and if anyone else has had the same issues. Many thanks

Do you have recent thyroid and vitamin results

Exactly what vitamin supplements are you taking

Taking vitamin D supplements can raise calcium levels

How much levothyroxine are you taking

Which brand is it

Do you always get same brand

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum especially with Hashimoto’s

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Lower vitamin levels more common as we get older

For good conversion of Ft4 (levothyroxine) to Ft3 (active hormone) we must maintain GOOD vitamin levels

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

If taking T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Thank you, I haven’t had any of these tests in the last 5-10 years. I think it’s about time I did! I will come back when I have the results. Thanks again.

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70:

Hi SlowDragon

Why stop biotin for 5-7 days, as it’s water soluble, so prob a couple of days should be ok?

Thanks

Most thyroid function tests use biotin-streptavidin technology, and biotin in your system can disrupt the test itself.

Some say small amounts don’t matter, helvella has a blog post on how much is ok. And as for delay, some say at least 2 days, others recco a week.

Generally - good, consist test hygiene is recommended. Do the gaps because better to leave no doubt your results are accurate. And Whatever you choose to do , be consistent for every test so they are as comparable as possible.

I have had HYPERparathyroidism it causes high calcium levels and high parathyroid levels. You need to have a blood test to check your calcium, parathyroid and vitamin D at the same time. Www.parathyroid.co.uk has good information.

A start then would be to get an appointment with endocrine dept and have tests to rule out parathyroid involvement. I've had issues with hypoparathyroidism so low calcium as apposed to your high following thyroid removal but the endocrinologist will look into this for you .

You should never have elevated calcium. You definitely need to get that checked out. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2006, Primary Hyperparathyroidism in 2014 with the removal of two parathyroid glands due to adenomas. I feel great now, no more elevated calcium since having the surgery. I had symptoms with the hyperparathyroidism which included extreme fatigue, elevated blood pressure, brain fog. Hyperparathyroidism destroys your bones too. I did have my surgery at the Norman parathyroid center in Tampa florida. They have an excellent website with lots of information. Check out this site, parathyroid.com.
