I've just had my TPO antibodies tested and my results have come back at 78 iu/ml. Is this significantly high?
I really want to lower this as i've heard it could have an impact on conceiving and pregnancy, and particularly concerned about possible baby defects. Has anyone tried the AIP (auto immune protocol diet) or anything else that has helped to lower their TPO antibodies?
Thanks in advance

Are you diagnosed as hypothyroid and prescribed levothyroxine?
What’s the range on TPO antibodies?
Here in U.K. it’s usually over 34 is above range
Are you in the U.K. or elsewhere
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 too
Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease
About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies
Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s
Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.
Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and (if on levothyroxine) last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
78 isn't terribly high, no. Mine were over 400. They can be much higher than that. Also, it's very likely they will vary over time, going up and down. Nothing I have done diet-wise has ever had any effect on my antibodies, but after 8 years of Hashi's my TPO are now almost at a normal level.
i've seen various TPOab ranges in the region of <9 , <34 and <50 , so how high 78 is depends on the actual range used by your test .
presumably 78 is over range ? if so it's positive , but it's not particularly high. ....it is common to see autoimmune hypo patients with them in the hundreds , and some have them in the thousands. ....mine were 2499 at diagnosis , >3000 a couple of months later , then 195 17yrs later , and last time i looked they were 101.
i've seen >6000 somewhere on the forum.
i have done nothing to try and lower mine , i still eat my usual diet etc..... it is my understanding that TPOab levels (while they do fluctuate) , will usually have a generally downward trend over many years of having thyroid disease...(possibly because after many yrs of ongoing damage , there is less thyroid tissue for the immune system to attack ~ so less thyroid peroxidase is spilled from thyroid for thyroid peroxidase antibodies to clear up ... but i don't think anyone knows why for sure)
