I am new on here and have been suffering hir loss for over 14 years. I am 53 years of age and have a Serum TSH level 4.3 mU/L.
Can anyone advise if this is hypothyroidism? Each time I have seen a doctor and had a test, I have been told that my results are normal/borderline, which I find very frustrating.
There are other symptoms to, but my main worry is the hair loss, which is getting worse.

Hi, thank you for your response. I have had my ferritin checked and apparently, that is fine. I would like to try Levothyroxine, to see if helped with my conductions , but my GP will not prescribe it.
Serum ferritin level 91.3 ug/L
I totally understand. Do you know anywhere to get a second opinion?
No single number can diagnose you, and even a series of TSH results is not sufficient to figure out whether you are hypo, and if so, what the cause is, and best course of treatment.
Further, there are many reasons for hair loss, although thyroid hormones and low iron/ferritin are likely suspects, but that doesn’t help you with a safe or effective treatment.
This is a patient-to-patient forum, where we share our experiences with thyroid issues. None of us are doctors.
So that the forum can weigh in with more relevant advice, are you able to share more?
A complete picture of thyroid health comes from the following. It’s essential to include the ranges of each along with the result. If you have multiple results over time, please share those as well.
1) TSH
2) Free T3
3) Free T4
Plus these vitamins
4) ferritin
5) folate
6) B12
7)Vit D3
Also, let us know if you have any antibody results:
1) TRab
2) TSI
3) TPOab
4) TGab
If you can tell us more about your background, or better yet, update it in your profile, including what country you are you in, that would be helpful.
Many people here struggle with hair loss, and if we know more about you others can share as well.
It is hypo, it's hypo when the TSH goes over 3. And in some countries you would be treated at that level. But the NHS tries to diagnose as few people as possible, so like the TSH at least over-range - possibly over 10! - on two consecutive tests a couple of months apart.
But it's not the TSH itself that is causing the hair-loss. TSH doesn't cause symptoms. But, if it's high, that means that your FT4/3 are low, and it's low t3 that causes symptoms. You really need those tested as well as TSH because TSH is only a very rough guide to thyroid status.
Slow Dragon, do I need to order this test as well as the other one I posted about (can’t find it now). I’m totally confused as what to test. Sorry to be a pain.
Hi, just wanted to mention a few months after I had Covid I suffered hair loss for approximately 6 months. It’s very common apparently. Just wondered if you have had Covid in the last 10 months or so
