I’m undiagnosed but have classic symptoms and have an existing long term rheumatoid disease which is autoimmune and other AI conditions.
Is it too much or too little stomach acid that’s causing this constant low grade nausea and loose bowel? I have restarted the prescribed PPI omeprazole 20 x 2 daily to control it. The side effect headache is dreadful again but it’s the lesser of two evils.

If you're hypo then it's low stomach acid. The undigested food sits in the pit or your stomach and ferments, causing all sorts of symptoms - some of them the same as high stomach acid. But Omeprazole isn't going to control it because it reduces stomach acid even further, making things worse.
I don’t know what I am, I just know that I’m not well and my symptoms may indicate thyroid issues. It all started after a traumatic time and I already have an AI condition. Cancer had been ruled out as have other things suspected as the cause such as celiac disease and h- pylori (sorry spelling?) Blood showed no activity of my rheumatoid condition being active too which is a joke considering the pain but I accept that given its rarity.
TSH was tested ( under incorrect conditions) unexpectedly by the nurse at a recent effort to try and see a GP. I know the test is useless but it was within range so no help offered. Surgery does not acknowledge private testing apparently which is the clear next step but pointless if they won’t help.
Well, if you do a private test at least you will know what's going on and that's a big step forward. You'll feel more self-confident confronting your doctor. But make sure you get antibodies tested.
Try the burb test, as explained in one of the links. It won't help you with your thyroid diagnosis but you'll know whether to continue with the Omeprazole or not.
As an aside, I wouldn't touch PPIs with a barge pole! They're dreadful things. Several articles about them on my profile page.
Agree with you greygoose about PPI's. I have slso read about the link to dementia which could be due to the LOW B12 caused by the acid reduction. No wonder PPI's should be a short course - mentioned in thd PIL I believe....
edit: just looked up B12 deficiency and I have all those symptoms however when prescribed PPI Feb 22 the dose was 20 mg x 2 per day and I weaned off after 6 months so not long term use . Some of the symptoms could in my case be attributed to Stills Disease or whatever is going on with me that’s yet to be diagnosed.
No, I working up to getting full thyroid and mineral tests done. Difficult as my family thinks it’s all in my head and my surgery have said I can test what I like but they go with their TSH test which says within range. Plus muddied waters as already have a long term AI condition of rheumatoid nature
Oh dear - surely having the CORRECT testing is the best and easiest place to start. Nothing to do with your family - unless they hold your purse strings of course. I too have an AI condition which does not prevent me having regular and full on-line private testing for the thyroid and nutrients...
It's a battle ! I advocate for myself and do my best to keep learning and help others understand the complexities of the thyroid - including the medics !
Yes I’ve read your profile page and I’m in agreement re PPIs , I weaned off them last year and only resumed for a few days to get me through looking after 87 year old frail mum over Xmas. I’m going cold turkey today ….. pun intended.
I will do the test later as you suggest as knowledge is power.
