Glutened!

so… confession

Had an almond croissant possibly 2! I did really enjoy them.

Been gluten free your years now since hashimoto diagnosis and advice from here. Thought I’d got away with it but after a week maybe, started getting heartburn, then my diverticula disease flared up two days ago and now getting pain in left sacro iliac area.

So my questions are - is this due to having gluten? What can I do now? How long will it last?

Thank you as always.

Lets call it a gluten test ... and you positively can still not tolerate it !

Did you not feel brain foggy and "pants" too ? Our family seem to get this for a week.

I doubt anyone can tell you how long with any certainty.

I has some gorgeous Danish seed crackers with French ingredients list in the summer that I did not realise had oats in and it took a month or so for the heartburn and gut disturbance to calm down.

I keep wondering about these gluten ease type products as a layer of protection when eating out - not sure if they are snakeoil.

very kind of you to call it a gluten test rather than week willed and gluttony ☺️

Sleepman,

Yes I’m sceptical regarding GlutenEase too, as the formula just looks like a combo of digestive enzymes that you could buy for cheaper. However, having said that, since I've taken digestive enzymes (for a number of years now) to help me break down meat, I seem to tolerate gluten much better on the odd occasion I get ‘gluten'd’.

Sleepman,

I’ve just had a more in-depth look at GlutenEase ingredients and seems DPP-IV (aka dipeptidyl peptidase IV) is a form of protease enzyme (that I supplement anyway) and helps to degrade gluten protein. Therefore, I conclude I have unintentionally proven it works 😁.

And I found these papers that say DPP-IV works better when combined with aspergillopepsin, which is another potent digestive enzyme.

🤔 now to find a supplement that contains both.

Meanwhile, Fluffyone , if these gluten-accidents make you feel bad have you thought about supplementing some digestive enzymes?

I shall do a trial I think. Thank you

Been busy with work

Excited by Radds insight.

Need to look at these enzymes, even if it is just as faster recovery.

I am also fascinated by the week’s delay in reaction.

Same with stress or Levo dose changes or who knows what else… we hypos have to be really consistent and in tune with our habits to have any chance of connecting the dots from cause and effect when there can be anywhere from one week or one month (or more) between!

FIR

A delayed reaction to gluten is not uncommon, and it is well documented the same is said regarding celiac symptoms.

It is not necessarily an indication of a lesser reaction as years of being challenged can make the immune system less responsive. Other influencing factors might be the degree of sensitivity, how strict the g/f diet has been adhered to and intestinal damage which if bad can take many weeks/months to recover from with varying symptoms being felt at different intervals.

Re delayed reaction.

I’m coeliac with asymptomatic symptoms I only know via my nutritional status and antibody test I have yearly now… my story isn’t all that strange once you read into how many didn’t or don’t know they’re coeliac due to no digestive related issues … mine was picked up by chance and boy my antibodies were high they couldn’t count took approx 9 months to reduce and 3yrs to be negative - I am very strict about my diet … however I’m sure my appalling low vitamin and iron status would cause me some serious problems if continued… I did have skin problems which could of pin pointed to coeliac if GP referred me to a dermatologist but as I had asthma and eczema it’s was never looked into … I don’t get skin problems too much at all now, my asthma is very well controlled too now.

My gastroscope showed damaged villi at my test and we almost thought I had refractory disease as my antibodies weren’t going down, I was told must be still eating gluten and obviously symptoms versus severity of conditions isn’t something to go on alone … many people are very symptomatic with low antibodies… it amazes me why Drs always say regarding symptoms you can’t have this that or the other… I am a walking example you cannot just go on symptoms alone!

The same delayed reaction happened to me though I didn’t really recognise it. A cinnamon swirl in my case. So I researched & I think this is the only enzyme mix that includes what we need.

I’ve read bad things about iHerb so I wouldn’t shop there.

Been there and done that but personally now find these Ginger capsules sort things pretty quick. Brilliant for SIBO too if you get break through symptoms as I’m currently doing the herbal biologic course. Piping Rock ship within 5 days.
