Accord levothyroxine

In my previous posts I have talked about Teva and the bad side effects I experience, now it’s Accord

In April I was given Accord 100mg, ( usually Mercury Pharma) I never gave it another thought as long as it wasn’t Teva.

I started to have stomach pains and swelling, it got to be so debilitating I resorted to going to see a doctor multiple times. Since then I have undergone all sorts of blood tests CA125 ovarian cancer test, FIT bowel cancer tests scans internal and external and saw a gastroenterologist but nothing has shown up and all the gastroenterologist could suggest was Amitriptylene.

Having gone through all of that I have found that it was all the result of taking Accord.

The pharmacist has again put a note on file not to dispense Accord but they tried to give me Hillcrest which, on checking the side of the box, was Accord.

The pharmacist gave me Wockhardt, but they only produce 25’s but on taking those at the correct dose my stomach pain eventually stopped.

Sorry to hear of your issues. Can I ask how long before your stomach settled down after stopping the Accord. I started taking 100mg of levothyroxine (Accord) 3 at the end of October as part of block and replace for Graves. Within 48 hours of starting it I had stomach bloating, excessive wind and a horrible sensation of trapped burps. After 2 and a half weeks my endo despite saying he didn't think my digestive issues had anything to do with my medication took me off levothyroxine. I've stayed on carbimazole but at a reduced dosage. I'd been on 40 mg of carbimazole for 6 weeks when I started the levothyroxin and now on 20mg since stopping the levothyroxine. My digestive issues have not resolved as yet. I have had a couple of better days since stopping the levothyroxine but had a horrible day yesterday and now having a better one today. I have a gastro consultant appointment next week but I'm still wondering if it's the medication - either the levothyroxine or carbimazole that's the problem. If the levothyroxine it would be good to know how long the misery lasts now I've stopped taking it.

Nb I had wondered if symptoms were because I'd gone under active but latest blood tests suggest not as I'm still over active although levels have come down.

Hi SAFSUK,

Sorry to tell you but it was 3/4 days I experienced a reduction of the pain, although my stomach is still swollen.

For me it’s the result of the fillers they use to bulk out the medication, Mannitol and Acacia seems to be the culprits.

Best of luck with your Gastro appointment

Thanks - would rather you'd said a week or so lol but helpful to know. Glad you're feeling a bit better.

Please, for the benefit of all of us, if you have not already done so, put in a Yellow Card report.

Note that AAH Hillcross 50 and 100 are, as you say, Accord. But their 25 tablets are Teva. Just to confuse further.

All such information is in my UK medicines document. And I update it very frequently - as soon as I know of any changes.

helvella's medicines documents (UK) can be found here:

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines licensed in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. There is now a specific world desiccated thyroid document.

I highly recommend viewing on a computer screen, or a decent sized tablet, rather than a phone. Even I find it less than satisfactory trying to view them on my phone.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - UK

The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrixes for levothyroxine tablets, oral solutions and liothyronine available in the UK. Includes injectables and descriptions of tablet markings which allow identification. Latest updates include all declared ingredients for all UK-licensed products and links to Patient Information Leaflets, Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d), British National Formulary, NHS Drug Tariff, etc. PLUS how to write prescriptions in Appendix F.

Also includes links for anti-thyroid medicines (but not product details).

helvella - Excipients

Details of excipients are in my Excipients document. This includes all excipients identified in UK-licensed thyroid hormone medicines.
