Vitamin D Levels Advice Please

I recently had 25Hydroxy (Vitamin D) blood test along with others. It came back as;

Serum total 25-hydroxy vitamin D level (Xabo0) 38 nmol/L

Vitamin D <30nmol/L indicates Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D >50nmol/L indicates adequate Vitamin D levels

By text my GP informed me he had prescribed and sent to my pharmacy a 6 weeks loading dose of 50,000 IU’s which by my calculation is 1,250 mcg once a week for 6 weeks.

I usually take 400 IU’s 10mcg between September and June but have not started again this year as yet so thought whilst having other blood tests requested Vit D to see where I was at .

Last time I was at 44 nmol/L. I was advised by a GP to take over the counter 25mcg 10,000 IU’s daily.

I think this dosing level of 50,000 1,250 is bit too much and a 1,000 25mcg would be more appropriate, what do you kind people think?

You could buy your own vitamin D

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

One spray = 1000iu

amazon.co.uk/BetterYou-Dlux...

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with thyroid issues we frequently need higher dose than average

Suggest you try 3 sprays per day = 3000iu daily

Retest in 8 weeks

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose all year to keep it there.

Not just in winter
