I’ve just had a test done by Monitor my Health. My vitamin D result is 171 nmol/L. The result was given with a note saying my vitamin D level was high and could be harmful, and to stop taking non-prescribed vitamin D, as there is no further benefit to be gained. In the past I have had a level as low as 15nmol/L, so I do take a supplement.
The result was given without lab ranges so I e-mailed and asked for them. and this is what they sent me.
The ranges are:
Below 10 = Deficient
10 – 34 = Insufficient
35 - 60 = Adequate
61 - 100 = Replete
Above 100 = Too High
The last time I had a vitamin D test was with Medichecks 147 (50-250nmol/L) and my result wasn’t marked as abnormal.

That happened to me with MMH recently. I did two tests at exactly the same time a thyroid one that did ‘everything’ with Medichecks and HbA1c, cholesterol and vitamin D was included somewhere, I think there was a thyroid test in with the other two 🤔
Without looking it up the MMH one said my vit D was too high but according to the Medichecks it was fine. OK the result was high - or I’d say ‘well up in the range’ but I wouldn’t say it was ridiculously high or even that I needed to reduce my vitamin d - I take 1000iU a day and always have done as I have osteoporosis
I’m going with the Medichecks result. The MMH opinion seemed a bit odd to me so rightly or wrongly I ignored it plus it was the other two results I was interested in.
Just looked - mine was 130 below the 140 line they have marked as Excess. So you are well over that.
Reducing dose is one option. A second option is to reduce the number of days the supplement is taken. I nearly always use the second option for most of my supplements because it saves wastage and reduces costs.
Thanks SlowDragon. I increased my dose to 4000 over winter (I take 3000 for the rest of the year). I’ll reduce it back to 3000 and retest in a few months.
I had a Vitamin D test with MMH in September last year. I think their 'green' range still goes to 250nmol/l.
My result was 126nmol/l and I have been taking 3000IU Vitamin D2+K2 for over a couple of years now. The advice was also to stop 🙄 Vitamin D supplementation, as no further benefits was to be gained'. Needless to say, but I ignored that comment, especially heading into winter!😅
I think the general consensus is at least above 75nmol/l and perhaps aiming between 100 and 150nmol/l of Vitamin D for optimal levels.
If I was you, I would definitely not stop (as you may end up where you have been before), but perhaps try to reduce your intake so you get to between 100 and 150nmol/l. You could either reduce the daily dose or as humanbean has suggested, just reduce the number of days you are taking your Vitamin D supplement. If you have a supplement that works and you have already, you can just alter the days when you are taking it, so you don't need to go and buy another one!😉
Thanks Tina_Maria, I definitely don’t want to end up with such low vitD levels again so I won’t be stopping. I found the MMH advice to stop surprising. I’ll reduce my dose and test again in a few months.
