Did you check out if your surgery are at least writing some T3 prescriptions ?
If you go into openprescribing.net - there are comparison tables with other surgeries and other ICB areas - as to what rules and regulations are in place in your catchment area.
Enter Liothyronine - as the drug - and if your surgery and ICB area are with very low T3 prescription levels compared to other surgeries / ICB area - you are likely wasting your time going through the NHS for any other thyroid hormone treatment option.
I was in a similar place - and couldn't afford to go privately - so ended up DI for Myself.
But first we need a strong core strength of ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D and I started taking adrenal glandular around a year before I started self medicating - and still feel I need the glandular for my adrenals and still need to supplement my core strength as well as take Natural Desiccated Thyroid - and am much improved as to how the NHS would have me.
My doctors know nothing about thyroids the 2 that did 1 retired and the other one left when I have looked they are on the list but want prescribe it me because they don't know enough about it What is adrenal glandular medication sorry I struggle get used to using format
An adrenal glandular is basically adrenal glands derived from either pigs or cattle - dried and ground down into a powder which is then made up into tablets and taken orally.
Just as Natural Desiccated Thyroid - NDT - is derived from pig thyroid glands which go through a similar process - and are known to contain all the same hormones as that of the human thyroid gland - and the original treatment used successfully for over 100 years to treat hypothyroidism.
I have read about NDT which I think would probably suit me better I have allergic reaction to antibiotics penicillin I also had bad reaction to carbimazole & it was destroying my liver I've not felt right since I had the radioactive iodine then endup on levothyroxine doesn't matter if I have low dose or high dose just makes me feel worse no improvement what so ever only tsh gone down just feel shocking all the time and more aches and pains what do I need to see new endocrinology at end of month want to be prepared I've been taking my vitamins hoping that they have gone up been reading a few books I don't know weather to get medicheck blood panel or if he will want to do bloods himself what do you think?? I have thought of asking doctors for records on thyroids I can't get them from hospital???
If I were you I would arrange your own Full Thyroid blood panel to include the TSH Free T3 and Free T4 - inflammation, antibodies and ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D ;
If you haven't used a private blood test company before - there is a whole page of companies listed on the Thyroid UK website for you to chose from -
It is around 10/11 biomarkers and if in England I believe between them Medichecks and Blue Horizon offer a nurse home visit service to complete the venous blood draw for you - which I find the least stressful - though more expensive option - but it may well be quicker to chose a different option tin order to have the results back and checked through on here before the endo appointment
When the results are back - start a new post with all the blood test readings and ranges so forum members can talk you through what the results mean - so you will then have information and questions to take with you to the endo appointment.
You need to arrange the blood draw for early morning - by 9 am blood test and ideally on a Monday / Tuesday and then the results will be back before the weekend and not hanging around in the post or laboratory.
It is a fasting blood test - and you need to have left around a 24 hour window from your last dose of T4 - Levothyroxine and you take the T4 for that day after the blood draw.
If taking any supplements leave these all off for around a week before hand so we measure what your body is holding and not that just ingested.
If taking anything containing biotin - this can ' mess ' with the assay measures used in Laboratories - so also leave this off for around a week
I think that's all the instructions - maybe you've arranged a private blood test before and know all this :
You will not get NDT on the NHS - but you may get a trial of T3/T4 once we see your blood test results.
Did you look up your surgery and ICB area - how do they compare to other surgeries in your area and neighbouring ICB areas ?
Thank you pennyannie I've never done private blood panel so I think home visit would be good I've been getting advice from friend who also as thyroid problems and does private blood panel but she is away for a month and her wifi not working🥺 I've looked at medichecks and I was confusing on how to order with home visit I did go on the ICB I now you surgery do T3 prescription by they want give it me I'm gonna go on it again tonight and see if I can get my head round it and also medicheck do I also have to stop vitamin D & selenium?? Thank you for all your information your all some helpful its so hard to adsorbed all the information when you feel constantly drained and exhausted & very poor sleep I've got endocrinology appointment 26th Nov if I got private bloods done on Mon 18th would results be back or would I be best booking for 11th Nov??
OK - if the NHS endo is going to help you - she/he will - whether you have a private blood test and with or without our input - it is a simple as that - endos follow the hospital guideline / rules -
so don't get stressed out about anything or getting a private blood test in time.
Depending where you live and nurse availability the timing might be ' tight ' - I'm in Cornwall and when the nurse phones and offers me an appointment its around 3 weeks away - the blood test itself - is back within a couple of days.
let's wait until your friend is there to help you with the Medichecks order - and lets stop this stress building up inside of you -
The fact is as I wrote above - If the NHS endo is going to help you - s/he will -
irrespective of you having a private blood test or not -
they usually ask for NHS blood tests to be run prior to appointment -
though they may use the above information :
I doubt the surgery will run the vitamins and minerals anyway and we can arrange a full thyroid panel when your friend is back to help you - how does that sound - hopefully less stressful:
P.S. Did you ever get to trial liquid T4 - I seem to remember I suggested this to you at some point in time ?
Ye that sounds alot better my friend did say they will probably run there own bloodtests yes I doubt surgery will do vitamin & mineral bloodtest but I have results from last time I had them so should of improved I would hope I asked about T4 liquid trail and she said that's up to endocrinology 🙄 they really don't have a clue thank you for all your help it means so much to all of us your all amazing x
