Is iodine OK to have with hypothyroidism? By which I mean in milk substitutes etc. Thankyou.

I think it's best to avoid iodine as a supplement in milks. As far as I've read on here, if your taking thyroid hormones, they contain all the iodine you need. It is however a pain in the bum as so many plant milks have iodine in them!

You do know that cow's milk also contains iodine?

All alternative milks are fortified to get them as close in nutritional value to cows milk, so I personally don't worry about it.

No I didn't know that! But I'm lactose intolerant so can't drink cows milk anyway 🙃 I tried soya milk for quite a long time but that didn't really agree with me either so changed to the almond milk. I read somewhere about iodine affecting thyroid and realised ge almond milk contains it so thought I ask if it was still OK to drink or if I ought to find an alternative!

Thanks for replying

I agree with Jingley - if it has an amount of iodine similar to cow's milk and you don't drink pints and pints - no problem.

Remember, an awful lot of people have been through the entire process of becoming hypothyroid, diagnosed, treated, feeling well - all without giving a single thought to that level of iodine.

I'd be more concerned about soya milk for it being soya than iodine content. :-)

I don't have much just in my decaf coffee and maybe 150ml in cereal if I have cereal which isn't every day. I didn't know I had a thyroid problem when I was having soya milk and soya yogurts! But had to change due to tummy issues anyway. Just wanted to check on here that it was OK or not 🙂

If someone has problems with milk in the diet, it's possibly the milk sugar, lactose. Lactose free semi-skimmed cow's milk is available, and tastes the same as regular milk. All the other 'milks' are made with water and additives, and don't actually occur naturally. Many cultures around the world do not have milk in their diet after babyhood, it's mainly us in the West which has continued to include it in our diets.

Me too. The lactose intolerance bit. 🤢

Took me a while to find a good alternative. I spent a fortune on different milks before I found one I actually enjoyed in my coffee ☕

I've tried tons of varieties of coconut milk, rice milk, coconut and rice milk and oat milks. I've always stayed away from soy milk.

If you're really concerned, I'm sure there are milks out there without iodine.

I'm sticking with my barista style one. Makes coffee taste normal 😁

😊 I'm not overly concerned just thought I'd ask incase. I may try to find something different though. Took a long time to get used to the almond milk but it tastes normal to me now!

I'm not keen on almond milk. Tastes a bit nutty for me. I even tried pea milk once. It was ok but left a weird aftertaste.Oddly enough, I don't really like oats, can't stand flapjacks or porridge, but love my oat barista. 🙃

Pea milk? 🤣 didn't know that was a thing! Can't imagine that being very nice. I once tried peas in a green smoothie 🤢 I like peas ... but that was really overpowering!

Lol. It's yellow peas not the green things you have with your fish and chips. It doesn't taste of peas and has a more creamy texture than other non-barista ones. Green smoothie?? No thanks 😳

I have seen Barista style in the supermarket and always thought it was coffee flavoured…is it?

Jingley profile image

No, not coffee flavour. It's just the same as the 'regular' ones, but a bit thicker and creamier. More the consistency of real full fat milk.

Having said that, I've also seen ready made barista style coffee drinks in cartons in supermarkets. I haven't tried them though.
