I have recently had a urine iodine test which showed I was very deficient. Apparently this test in isolation isn't particularly useful so I would like to follow it up with a 24hr loading iodine test. Would my gp be likely to do this if I requested it or don't they do it on the NHS

Iodine loading test?

Can you let us know why this test isn't particularly useful? Do you have a link to some information?
The loading test is said to be flawed:

The Genova non-loading test is the one that is used to check existing levels and for monitoring when supplementing.
For another link on why the iodine loading test is not a great idea - it's old but still worth reading :

Thanks HB. I think I used to have that link but lost it when I changed my PC last year. Saved it again now
Hi there, there is some information in this link stopthethyroidmadness.com/i... a thyroid functional practitioner had told me that a single urine test in isolation isn't really effective as it only tells you how much you have had in your diet at that paticular time
That link gives meSorry, but the page you were trying to view does not exist.
It looks like this was the result of either:
a mistyped address
an out-of-date link
Have you read the two articles linked to by myself and Humanbean?
Hi there, yes I have read the articles. They are very interesting. Not sure what to do next with this deficient result that I have. Here is the link that I meant to sendstopthethyroidmadness.com/i...
It also suggests an iodine loading test on the Facebook page and a thyroid functional med practitioner said that my test in isolation doesn't really indicate much. Confused!
Iodine supplementation should be taken under the guidance of an experienced practioner.
Do you mean iodine? Would my gp be willing to do a follow up test do you think? I find it hard to belive they don't really do them anymore
Sorry, yes, iodine (flipping auto thingy, have corrected it).I don't know if your GP can do an iodine test, or even know anything about iodine, it's possibly something more likely to be done by a private practitioner.
😊 That's ok. I do that all the time. I find it unbelievable that they don't. It's such a basic test! . And so when testing for T3 and T4, say they are not in range. I would have thought that testing for iodine would be essential for finding out more, just like looking for nodules or testing for TPA's. Just my opinion but what do I know. I'm just sick and wiped out 24/7 and striving to try and get myself better like alot us. I love your little doggy by the way. Bichon Frise?
Yes, she's a Bichon 😊
I don't know if they would do an iodine test, I'm just guessing they probably don't. In over 45 years of being treated for hypothyroidism I don't think any doctor has ever known much about it or what to do if you still have symptoms and I've never been tested for anything other than TSH and FT4, and more recently FT3.
