Hashimoto's and Iodine:

I know that it is not recommended to take iodine when we have Hashi's. However, I have heard on the grapevine, that some people have had success with using it gradually. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of any success stories they can share?

Thanks,

PurrJones

What sort of success do you mean, PurrJones?

I am very interested in iodine and have looked into it and also ordered some. I joined the iodine group on yahoo groups and you can get a lot of information there. They claim that iodine may initially make Hashi worse but in the long run improve it. I do not have hashi as I had my thyroid out years ago but I have cystic breast condition and wanted to try it for that and for other potential benefits. Some of what they say seem to be a bit OTT but it is still interesting. I guess you have to make your own mind up. I had a kidney removed in Nov last year and my kidney function is not yet very good so I am putting it off until it has improved as excess iodine is excreted and I don't want an iodine build up . If you join the group you will get the iodine protocol and a lot of information and links

I think the explanation of why NOT to supplement with iodine (at least not until your antibodies have reduced to a very very low level) is done really well in the videos on the Hope for Hashimotos site.

This explains clearly, at a molecular level what happens when you add iodine / Iodide. Later in the videos he tells you when it CAN be safe to add it, and how to do so, but certainly not while you have any significant antibodies.

I have Dr Haskell's book - " Hope for Hashimoto's ". It most certainly has given me hope. I was diagnosed with Hashi's about 10 weeks ago. Mt GP says there is no cure, but Dr Haskell has a 3 phase plan to get Hashi patients well. Phase 1 is to reduce antibodies and TSH and then Phase 2 you re-introduce Iodine gradually, hopefully allowing your thyroid to start working correctly. I strongly urge any Hashi sufferer to get hold of this book. I am already on Phase 1 of this plan. Good Luck.

twinkle22 - did you do Dr. Haskell's protocol? I'm thinking about starting it but can't find many people who have already tried it. Was it successful?
