How to take medication

Hi everyone

I've recently been prescribed 25mg of Levothyroxine and I've been told to take it same time every morning away from food and caffeine.

Currently I'm setting my alarm for 8am every morning (as I've read this is when TSH is the highest) to take the tablets however this is affecting my sleep as I often struggle to fall asleep so can end up sleeping late. I work from home and don't start till later in the morning so wouldn't normally wake up at 8am, it would be more like 9.30am or 10am.

I'm feeling really tired because of this and can't tell if the tablets are helping me.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice?

Levothyroxine is an extremely fussy hormone and should always be taken on an empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.

Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

25mcg is a tiny dose unless you’re over 60

Standard STARTER Dose is 50mcg

Which brand is this 25mcg tablet

What are your most recent thyroid and vitamin results

Looking at previous posts you know that your hypothyroidism is autoimmune

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Have a read of my blog about bed-time dosing. It does NOT suit everyone - but it is an option and quite a few do bed-time dose.

I take mine just before I go to bed as I have other meds that I need to take in the morning.

You do not have to take levothyroxine in the morning. Lots of people find it more convenient to take it at bedtime. Make sure it's at least two hours after eating, so that you're taking the levo on an empty stomach. (However, if you're taking other medications at bedtime, this may not be the right solution to your problem).
