hyperthyroid again at 7 and 9 weeks after RAI treatment

anyone still manage a success story with RAI even though hyperthyroid at 9 weeks after treatment. My son has just had RAI and is now worse than ever. At 7 weeks post treatment his TSH was <0.01 T4 28.5 and T3 12.5 they said it hadn’t worked but would hold off going back on carbimazole and test again at 9 weeks which he had blood test yesterday and they phoned today to say worse than before and will put him back on the carbimazole … my question is has anyone experienced this but it still worked in the end or are we thinking it definitely hasn’t worked … so upset we’ve got to start all over again and knowing how long it takes for ATD to kick in. Any hope would be huge right now. Thank you

I'm replying to bump your post to the forum daily feed for members to review, as it seems to have been missed.

This is really unlucky!

It’s a knock back but your son can get back on track & he has your support.

I’m sure Ive read posts of people who have had 2x or more doses and are seeking to perfect their replacement treatment.

Bear in mind however you may be asking the wrong audience, the majority of patients do not not have any complicated issues. After RAI they either stop being hyperthyroid or become hypothyroid & begin replacement treatment which progresses as expected.

They are living their lives not seeking help on forum.

How much carbimazole has he been restarted on? Hopefully he has a retest booked by the 6 week mark. Dose often needs adjusting (reducing) to keep levels in range. Tracking own results is really helpful at ensuring treatment is right. Doctors just look for somewhere about in range. Often going by TSH. Although TSH isn’t reliable, dose should be adjusted by FT4 & FT3.

Has his key nutrients been tested? (Folate, ferritin, B12 & vitamin D) RAI & thyroid disfunction can seriously trash them. There are private options if doctor won’t test them all.

Hello … thank you for your reply … I just can’t believe it’s done nothing 😕 he’s put it off and really didn’t want to do it but gave in because of the yo yo ing for years on the carbimazole never managing remission so the fact when he finally decided to do it it’s not worked is rubbish. He had blood test at 7 weeks after RAI and they held off going back on carbimazole then and just did another blood test this week which is 9 weeks and phoned to say they need to restart him … but consultant phoning Thursday to say how much to take … I’m hoping they’ll continue with the 2 week blood tests for a bit as I’ve read the thyroid can throw its thyroxine out there as angered by the treatment so could still calm down. No they’ve not tested any of his vitamins since about 8 years ago when first disgnosed.
