melatonin & hashi's

Due to fact I need to start something for my bone health, I have come across that melatonin along w/3other supplements shows great promise in resorption and building of bone. However, I have read that melatonin may interfere w/TSH levels. Then, an abstract from endo publication showed that exogenous melatonin (15mg) showed marked decrease in removing anxiety & depression. Any posters have long term experience w/melatonin?

15mg of melatonin is quite a high dose. I'm prescribed 3mg which works to help my sleep disorder.

I have no knowledge of anything else it helps other than sleep and not noticed it affecting TSH.

I’ve taken 5mg at night for years. This helps my sleep. I have suppressed TSH because I take NDT but this hasn’t changed for years

15mg is a massive dose. Doses of 3 to 5mg or lower are the norm. I would not be over concerned with one publication reporting an effect of very high dosing.

Would you copy the link to the bone health and supplements you mention?

There is a strontium ranelate allowed in UK as last chance, not rx here in US -scary side effects. I have a couple more bookmarked, but won't bog you down!

Terebol, have you noticed any effect on your liver from taking this higher dose of melatonin? I've read some studies that it can reduce inflammation, which interests me because when my TSH is high, so are my liver enzymes, particularly Gamma. When TSH is normal, the liver tests come back in normal range. Of course the liver also has a key role in metabolizing any kind of medicine.

I take 1mg melatonin and it's more than enough, I feel sluggish the next morning. I only take it when I really need to sleep, for example during this terribly hot summer.

That is interesting - the liver effect. I am not, currently, taking melatonin as it has never helped me sleep. I will be discussing this w/my endo as alternative to rx bone meds. Read my response to jgoodwin977 re tulsi tea. What works for one, may not work for another, but good to have input.

I feel the same. I take when I need half of one melatonin. It works for me well. If I take more I have like a hang over.Everyone has to see what and how much works best for them.

I just ordered 10mg coz my insomnia is so bad and was told it’s also good for cancer. After reading the comments, maybe I’ll stick to 5mg, although I still don’t sleep with that, maybe it’s my adhd. I’ve got my tsh down, so when you say interferes, do you mean it makes the tsh go up in numbers or down? Thanks

Melatonin was never dependable for helping me sleep. My interest is in its part in bone health. What I have found helpful for my anxiety/overactive mind @2:30am has been tulsi tea. It has more grams of the tulsi blends than taking the capsules. Being summertime, I make a concentrated tusi tea & dilute. It was, particularly, interesting of the anxiety/depression reduction.

I used the pukka tulsi tea, but didn’t notice anything. What tulsi brand do you use? Also do you know how it interferes with the tsh? Thanks

Yes I too read somewhere I don't remember where that Melatonin helps with breast cancer.

Actually with melatonin for sleep, lower doses work better thn higher ones. I cant explain that but its true.

Try taking it a good few hours before you want to get sleepy and go to bed, not at bedtime. I take mine at around 9pm.

I am following this post with interest. I would be interested in reading the article about bone health. I’ve been trying to find info about melatonin depleting b vitamins. I heard one person mention this in a conversation but have never found any data supporting that statement….
