Melatonin and safety

Every Melatonin product I can see has a warning that it is unsuitable for people with auto immune disorders..like thyroid etc

Yet in his book Dr P recommends it.

Does anyone have experience of Melatonin good or bad, and would you like to comment on this please...thanks.

Where have you seen this warning? I bought mine in the US and do not recall seeing that.

I take Melatonin for a few nights to help settle sleep pattern and it works. Only side effect is feeling a bit groggy in the morning.

Perhaps consistent use every night is not recommended?

I take Melatonin in small doses very occasionally, and it hasn't caused me any problems recently, if I stick to doing that.

I was very ill when I first tried it a few years ago, with hypothyroidism that had been ignored for years and was eventually poorly treated, and it gave me massive headaches. I also had dreadfully low iron, which probably contributed. But over the last few years I have improved my thyroid hormone levels and my nutrient levels and I don't get headaches with melatonin any more.

Another side effect I get with melatonin, which still happens, is that using it regularly makes me depressed. My husband, who has no endocrine problems, also found it made him depressed.

So, I stick to occasional use, and find it helpful. I buy 3mg tablets (not capsules) from Ebay, and I cut them into smaller pieces - they tend to shatter. I will take from a third to a half of a tablet when I need it. A bottle of 240 tablets will last me a long time! I always take it once I'm in bed and am about to turn the light off.

Thanks so much..really helpful..esp the comments re depression...I may react the same I reckon...as valerian in all its forms does not really sit well with me...nor is it very effective...

I’m just waiting for an order of magnesium glycinate..as people say it has helped with sleep..,and I’m having some success already with magnesium citrate..

Oh ..what a merry go round !!

I always found valerian utterly useless. And it gave me thumping headaches too.
