Unwanted liothyronine reduction.

Hi just need a bit of advice please. For the last 18 years I have been on 60mcg of liothyronine until earlier this year when when a routine blood test in the morning which was supposedly for something else also was combined with thyroid health also apparently. As my morning dose of 40 mcg had only been taken approx two to three hours earlier the results were way out of sync and told to drop to 20 mcg off my daily dose immediately by phone from surgery despite my explanation for the reading she was still adamant about this. I had also reached the conclusion around the end of last year I may be now over supplied slightly given my age 68 and feeling overheated and a bit edgy. So I dropped 20mcg and continued on 40mcg for eight weeks and couldn't cope any longer I was lethargic, couldn't think straight, arms and legs aching terribly also cold and losing hair and went up a dress size so so put it to 50mcg daily and a month later felt almost human again at the time of my blood test. results were 5.2 ref (3.2- 6.4 ), However the surgery is still insisting 40 mcg as it's still to high. Is there anything I can do or will I just have to purchase my own as I am not prepared to be ill again. Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help.

20mcgs is a huge amount to drop all at once. Doctor can be very heavy handed sometimes and its the patients who pay the price.

What is the reasoning why your GP wont put your dose back up?

In fact your GP shouldnt be meddling with your T3 only dose, it should be an Endocrinologist. Do you still have one? Ask to be re referred back to an Endo and pick one who is T3 friendly.

email info@thyroiduk.org for a list of T3 friendly Endo,s aslthough some may not be in favoud of T3 monotherapy so do pick carefully. You can make a post asking for recommendations or feedback on specific Endo's and ask for feedback by private message only.

Depending on how much energy you have available to fight this then an alternative is Roseway Pharmacy prescribing service which shouldnt be too costly.

I feel for you. I'm on quite a high dose of t3 only and my endo has just increased it. The surgery are playing silly buggers not increasing it till surgery pharmacist as OK it. If you are no longer under endo and they will not budge then I would look into Roseway labs as Jaydee as said. It's totally wrong I know but it's an option.

I'm just waiting to get called in over my dose. I try to stay clear of the place so not to rock the boat

Ask them to put why they dropped your dose in writing. This will make them think. More than likely they looked at your TSH and do not understand that on Lio your results will be different than if you were on Levo. I wonder would they take an insulin test from someone who had just taken their insulin?

Of course the timing of the dose would affect the results. You could also claim you were taking a vitamin with biotin in it which as altered the results, and the drop has left you ill. Ask them why they want to drop it further in writing, as you are now ill with the previous drop. Sometimes asking for a "trial" increase seems to work as they think it is short term and then forget to reduce it.

Try "I now feel so ill with the reduction that I am looking to buy some from the internet". That scares them that you may buy something harmful.

Good luck!

Thank you for your help. I will write to them and hopefully they make take note. The problem where I live is they all think Liothyronine is just another name for levothyroxine and have no idea how it works. I had this conversation with the Rhuemy nurse last year and after researching was amazed she didn't know.
