curious question- does Levothyroxine effect you in the sun?? I’ve never had any issues before being in the sun- and today I’ve been out maybe for an hour or so and my skin is so sore and itchy?? I know with having a underactive thyroid you get dry skin etc but this is bizzare?

I get polymorphic light eruption now and it’s triggered by autoimmune disease- I have Graves’ disease

Just wondering where you get this rash. The last two years when the weather gets nice, and I'm out in short sleeves I start to get this itchy bumpy rash on both my forearms. It comes and goes in intensity. I was thinking that this was polymorphic light eruption. Just wondering about your symptoms? I've been making sure I wear sunscreen on my arms outside to help. Does the rash you get last during the nice weather when you're in the Sun and then go away in the winter? No one seems to know what this rash is. I have very sensitive skin and break out in hives easily too. I attribute this to my hashimoto's.

It was miss diagnosed as heat rash for many years despite me telling them it was not always hot or even warm - I literally get it in the sun all year ie: I go pink initially - polymorphic light eruption for me goes in half hour if I get out the sun and they’ll be no tan line it’s a pretty standard itchy rash that will - if I stay in the sun gradually get worse until extremely raised and bright red. If winter and sunny its it will happen to my face and hands as much as I’d like to also cover all that I can’t realistically so I go pink and risk a rash until I can get out of the sun. For some people gradual light exposure works but not for me I just have to stay out the sun or cover up (Im more that happy to cover myself as I’m not a pretty sight) there are also specialist suncreams that can help but again doesn’t completely stop it for me 🙂 basically I’m allergic to the sun ☀️ makes holidaying abroad an absolute nightmare but despite my love of swimming I’m so fat now from Carbimazole I wouldn’t go in the pool or sea anyway so it’s ok. I don’t wear shorts or T-shirts either outside.

Hope this helps x

Thanks it does help. After reading your story, I'm thankful my rash is just on my forearms. I know it is related to the Sun. I also am Sun sensitive. I usually always have a hat and sunscreen on. Don't sit out in the sun either. My skin will look like it's boiling I get these little red blotches on me.

I have an overactive thyroid and take carbimazole. I find it makes me extra sensitive to the sun and I burn easier than normal.

I’ve been on Carbimazole for a year and had the polymorphic light eruption for about 15 years so not that for me personally but defo heard other say similar on Carbimazole x

I've always had sun and heat sensitivity and unable to sit in the sun or tolerate the heat. It never dawned on me that dry skin was reason I just burn and don't tan if i do go out in it. Not been abroad for 15 years because of it. Yet another thing I can blame on thyroid!

Me too. I don’t have the energy to go abroad, sun or no sun. So I don’t actually think about it any more.

Hi Lisalee!

Yes always careful of sun on my arms ever since began Levo. Itchy beyond! Once it gets to that stage I find an Aftersun lotion containing aloe vera is the only thing that helps. Stay cool!
