Sun and graves

Hi everyone,

So I have Graves’ disease and I swear I cannot cope when it’s warm outside, I’m so bloody hot and clammy skin.. I’m going to Spain on weds and not looking forward to this heat. Normally I love being in the sunshine. Is it normal for people with graves to sweat more and can’t cope in the heat??? Also can you drink alcohol with graves I need lots of information before I go away..

Thanks

Hi Lauren,

Yes, heat is tough for us Graves folks to take - I’m afraid it goes with the territory. Alcohol can make you more warm and intensify the heat. Stay in the shade, stay hydrated and cool off by going into the air conditioning every so often. Hope this is helpful and have a good vacay!

Hey greekchick,

Thank you for reply I’m just curious about going away in the sun and drinking alcohol now as I never had any problems since being diagnosed with graves. So first time away since having it.

I do like alcohol on holiday il just take it easy and enjoy. Don’t know how il cope in the heat though lol it’s been hot here in Scotland and I can just cope and no more 😰

Please watch with tour alcohol intake as alot of us now can't tolerate it.. I had 3 cocktails and the day after ended up really ill in bed and missed three days of my holiday... had heat stroke. Nearly collapsed in the street on way to hotel after a walk and vomited rungs around myself and felt like my head was going to burst.. that was my first holiday since being diagnosed and experiencing heat intolerance. I was so lucky my husband didn't care about the wasted holiday and was more worried about myself.. Please take it easy plenty fluids and stay in the shade as much as possible

If your like me I can not take the heat , I have a property and lots of animals in Australia and in summer time i have to get up 5.00am feed the animals in the cool part of the day and if I have to go out in the heat I need to rush back in and sit in front of the air conditioner or I feel unwell . If I were you I would have your fun at night if it's a hot day and spend the day inside somewhere in cool air conditioning ., then you can have a drink of alcohol at night when cooler. I have Graves but do not drink alcohol.

I feel your pain. I feel hot all the time and I'm hypo and have Hashimotos disease.. Was on holiday to Turkey for 10 days and it was hell. The temp was in the late 90 early 100 degree. Like yourself I used to love the heat but I'm now heat intolerant 😣 will need to get my thyroid and vitamin levels under control before going on another holiday .. staying cool as in staying in the shade and dipped in the pool worked great for me and aircon in room at night was a God send. I cant drink alcohol as it has bad reaction on my body like alot of thyroid sufferers

I have similar heat issues. Am currently in Norway and just sweating in this heat. So yes, I'm keeping in the shade and getting in the sea and streams and lakes as much as possible - which is so wonderful! A glass of wine or a G&T seems okay. But drink lots of water.

I really struggle in the heat. Drink lots of water and sit still. Have trouble sleeping as all I feel is hot and clammy 😤
