am I hypothyroid now?

Help please! I have posted these on facebook group for Graves and a few people came back saying that I’m severely hypothyroid and I should change my endo as this should have never got that low. (BTW I’m seeing a recommended Endo 🤦🏻‍♀️) what are your views?

17 April (I was then on 20mg Carbimazole, after the test I reduced to 10mg)

TSH 0.82 ( 0.465-4.68)

T4 8.2 (10-28.2)

T3 4.6 (4.3-8.1)

6 June

TSH 1.1 ( 0.465-4.68)

T4 8.3 (10-28.2)

T3 5.4 (4.3-8.1)

I have now reduced to 5mg.

TSH can take time, months or years, to recover to levels that would be expected based on thyroid hormone levels alone. Therefore, after a period of hyperthyroidism

Your FT4 is clearly far too low.

Your FT3 is clearly too low. Our bodies prioritise T3 when there is insufficient thyroid hormone. So it is possibly only even that high because your body is doing what it can to keep it there.

Yes - you should NOT have thyroid hormones this low.

I'll leave it to those who have gone through this to add more.

I was rendered hypo when I was being treated for Graves’ disease

I started at

TSH - < 0.03 (0.35 - 5.5 ) Below low reference limit.

Free T4. - 28. 6. (10.0 - 19.8)

Result - started 20 mcg Carbimazole daily - Ispent four weeks on 20mcg carbimazole.

After four weeks my bloods showed no change in that time so that was followed by two months in 40 mcg carbimazole with no blood tests so that by the time I actually saw my consultant for the first time I was well and truly hypo! I have to say Graves feels awful but as all hypo suffers know hypo is awful too - just in a different way.

My hospital treats by block and replace, which I found very straightforward, there doesn’t seem to be any guesswork involved, I was told my treatment would take a year and it took exactly that.

When I got there for my first endo appointment when levothyroxine was added in my results were

TSH - 7.0. (0.35 - 5.5)

FreeT4 - 10.2. (10.0 - 19.8)

Although I had regular blood tests when my levo was increased - the carb stayed at 40 mcg throughout my treatment, the levo just increase every visit until one day everything was stopped and that was my treatment finished. My T3 was never tested in the whole year I was treated.

Is your consultant supervising the changes in your carbimazole or are you doing it yourself? What does he/she say about your results and what are their plans for you? All that was explained to me on my first endo visit.

Hopefully someone being treated by titration will be able to give you more of an idea of how that works. Good luck.

Thank you. All medication changes were advised by my endo. I have emailed him as it’s going to be 9 weeks before I see him again due to holiday period so not sure if staying on 5mg for all this time is acceptable. It’s just deflating that I can’t even trust the doctor and having to research myself whilst he is raking in. 😕

I know, it is absolutely sickening isn’t it.

You could always have a Medichecks blood test half way through to see what’s happening. I ended up doing that because my T3 D3, B12, ferritin and folates were never checked by my hospital although I did ask for and had my B12 checked once - I said my mother had some sort of problem with hers - which she did.

I liked the feeling of going to the hospital knowing what they were going to tell me when I got there. Good luck with it.
