London Endocrinologist for hyperthyroidism

Hello all,

I wonder if anybody can help? I'm looking for recommendations for an endo specialising in hyper-thyroidism, preferably in males, in London.

I'm looking for physicians rather than surgeons, and those with an up-to-date 360 approach rather than belts-and-braces nuke options!

It's for a private consultation—although I know the rule is go with consultants that are also NHS. I've read of Mark Spring and P Jenkins, although the later isn't NHS anymore...

Any help most appreciated! I'll look out in my DM's as I know posts concerning doctors aren't allowed.

Kind regards

Hello Woad and welcome to the forum :

I can't help you with a recommendation but just to say that if with Graves and positive and over range TSI or TRab - TSH Thyroid Receptor antibodies - there is no cure for this Auto Immune disease and an Anti Thyroid drug is prescribed to ' buy you time ' while we wait for your immune system to calm down again and hopefully your thyroid reset itself without the need for any drugs.

The most recent research suggests the longer the AT drug is prescribed the better the long term outlook for the patient -

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/338...

and as for the ' RAI thyroid ablation ' - this speaks for itself - QOL 10 years post RAI -

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/306...

You might like to dip into Elaine Moore 's books and website as I found this the most well rounded of all I researched - though 10 years too late for me as I was ' nuked ' in 2005 -when I knew nothing and simply trusted the medical profession and advised this was a safer option than the AT drug which suited me very well.

I believe RAI should not even be considered as a ' treatment therapy ' in what we presume a health care setting let alone used for an AI disease for which there is no cure.

Thank you pennyannie—that really is most appreciated, and thank you for sharing your experience for our benefit. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I've been on AT for 18 months now (hyper triggered by extreme stress, antibodies are present) and have tapered off myself as I've heard absolutely nothing from my NHS department. I'm concerned I've been too hasty, so may try and taper myself back on again...

That's likely a good idea until you find a medical professional -

Do you have stock of Carbimazole or Propylthiouracil - PTU - to tide you over - and any current T3 and T4 blood test readings/ranges ?

Recommendations / discussions of endocrinologists can be sent via PM (chat) please, as we cant discuss individual doctors on forum. So post will be closed to replies.

Also consider Zoom consultations are an option for endocrinologist further from your area. Always arrange a full thyroid & nutrient test before attending any consultation. Including thyroid function & key nutrients - folate, ferritin, B12 & vitamin D

Thyroid UK has compiled of private GPs & Endocrinologists. You can obtain list by contacting Thyroid U.K. either by emailing info@thyroiduk.org or using this online form thyroiduk.org/about-thyroid...
