Private endocrinologist recommendation (London)?

I’m being referred to an endocrinologist due to abnormally high levels of cortisol. I was diagnosed with PCOS (lean) last year and strongly suspect the two are linked.

I am going to go privately rather than the nhs (waiting list is 3 months) and was hoping someone might be able to recommend an endocrinologist in London maybe with a specialism in PCOS etc too?

Please let me know if there is anyone who you have had a good experience with.

Thabks x

Perhaps not what you want to hear, but the best one i know and he is probably one of the best is in Kent, he is not too bad on prices either, I could send you a personal message if your interested, I found him NOT by accident and he then went on to dx my mother and sister.

Hello 1Cazza. I have just joined this forum as I am so keen to help my lovely daughter. Thyroid antibodies, feels cold, low mood, weight gain, PCOS, sooooo tired half the time. Endo in 2015 said all her levels were fine except antibodies. At 450. Nothing done and it’s is getting worse. She is 27 now. Please can you give the name of your endocrinologist in Kent? I have hypothyroid and antibodies and they say it is often genetic? I should be so grateful. Thank you.

Hi

I hope you find someone to help you.

In the meantime on stopthethyroidmadbess.com there is some v useful info on high cortisol. I take holy basil and drink tulsi tea.

Did you have the saliva tests with dhea? Low dhea meds May well help too- see dr Sarah Myhill. Com - the adrenal gear box.

Forgive me if this is intrusive but what were your levels?

I’ve always thought ( as a women ) hormones played a part together with a long term illness.

My cortisol was initially 50 range (5-10) in the morning. I can’t say I noticed but as I had no dhea I addressed that first. Now the cortisol in the night and morning are far higher and I can tell. I am in the process of altering my meds and I wish you all the v best in getting to the bottom of the problem.

Do you have Hashimoto's also called autoimmune thyroid disease diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies?

PCOS and Hashimoto's are often linked

pcosdiva.com/2015/08/got-pc...

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies. Plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12.

Essential to test thyroid antibodies plus vitamins

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's

Thank you that’s really helpful - they tested a few thyroid and they came back normal. I’m sure they’ll do more in depth tests after the referral.

My cortisol was 1118 (normal range is about 130-500) which was the gp’s main concern.

Not sure yet if I need a thyroid specialist or just a general endocrinologist..!

Hi just a thought, are you in the contraceptive pill, if so we were told that it can cause falsely high cortisol due to the binding globulin??? Think my daughters cortisol was around the 850/900. Her urine cortisol was ok and in range. Still worriesme though.

I am and the gp didn’t mention it to me...I have a second appointment to repeat the bloods next week so will mention it then. Thanks!

My daughters gp didn’t know either juts went into a meltdown when she saw how high it was! We saw an endocrinologist who was useless apart from that one little bit of info about the pill falsely raising it, told us in no uncenrtain terms did my daughter have pcos as she is slim! Every hormone test has been out of range and she has all the other signs. My faith in most doctors is zero! Good luck at your appointment. X

Such a shame you had a bad experience. Surprised the endocrinologist didn’t understand there are different types of PCOS caused by issues than insulin resistance.

Claire Goodwin is the PCOS nutritionist and has a really informative website, I’ve found lots of her advice useful. Google her, she also offers consultations.

Lara Briden has written a book called ‘the period repair manual’ which is fantastic and offers sound info and advice on PCOS. I’ve read this too and found it helpful. It’s available on amazon.
