Atrophied Thyroid....

Hi All,

I looking for advice again!

After being ill over Christmas and convinced it was my medication, coming off everything bar my 100mg Levothyroxine, symptoms didn't improve. My GP thought I had Sjorgrens, I've been told CREST too, only to find out in a call from an RA Consultant on Monday which i had seen last year that none of these are the case. However, after throat scans I've now been told that my Thyroid has atrophied and now very small😳I was first told in the early 80's I had an erratic thyroid, that being said a number of times over the years. I had big pregnancy and getting pregnant problems, unexplained weight gain, hair breaking etc, etc. Medication only being offered 4yrs ago. I had a full Thyroid test done privately after following a link on here and was all geared up to telling my GP I DO need meds upping after getting advice on here; But this new information has blown me away as this can happen with auto immune disease and when Thyroid issues left untreated over a number of years! Although I've googled till eyes fell out, anyone have any advice on next step I should take with GP please? I've previously asked to be referred to an Endocrinologist but was ignored. Always being told I'm in range! Would only an Endo prescribe T3 too? I need to be fully ready with info for GP as by own admission doesn't know much about Thyroid 😵‍💫

Thanks in advance xx

I'd gen up by reading some more I fo on Hypothyroidism. Have you read, Living with Your Thyroid by Barry Durrant Peatfield. He explains it very well. Unless you are very luck you are unlikely to have a consult with an informed GP. They eill go on TSH and treat by it. They're told to fo this by the nhs. Even though this approach was proven to lead to under treatment.

You can only get liothyronine prescribed by an Endo. GPs are not allowed to. ICBS in many areas have either blacklighted T3 or heavily restricted. In my area both T3 & ndt are blacklighted and nhs endos are only allowed to prescribe levothyroxine. So you need to check this out first.

If you want to try T3 you will very likely have to see a private Endo. Be careful to fully check out they are T3 friendly. Many are not. Thyroid UK have a list but you are best post on here for private messages back.

Hi waveguides

Thanks for your reply, no I haven't read that book, but I will do! I'm fed up of resolving my own health issues tbh, but forewarned is forearmed! Thanks for your help xx
