Endo: I don't wish to discuss TSH with you as we disagree (0.05 results from 5 months ago)
Me: ๐ค (zipped mouth)
Your fT4 is near the top of the range 17.2 (12-22) blah blah heart and bone issues blah blah
๐(confused) even though it is actually in the middle? Are you interested to hear how I feel I've been making great progress... though my resting heart rate is now down to 55bpm?
The range is designed to cover people of all sizes and for your size I would not accept it any higher!
๐ฎ(open mouth) ๐ค (zipped)
I could tell your GP not to prescribe any more with results like this!
Here is a blood test form for next month, I shall keep you on the same dose... shall we do this by phone next time?
Great... thank you, by phone would be great... quick exit ๐ (grinning and a little sweaty!)
(for ย ย tattybogle ๐คญ(chuckling))
Well at least I have secured my NHS prescription for another year...๐คทโโ๏ธ

I did say "it's about 55%?".... her comment about "the range isdesigned to fit all sizes and I wouldn't want anyone your size any higher than that!" ....that silenced me! I've never heard such nonsense ๐ฒ
tbh the comment was so left field that my mouth just fell open.... (I had primed myself to say as little as possible) I assume she thought in wonderment at her knowledge ๐ฌ
Excellent self control, TiggerMe!!!!!!!!! It's better they feel you're in wonderment of their knowledge than feel challenged in any way. I'm in wonderment of your forbearance. Self preservation made you do it, I guess. Way to go!
Absolutely, she didn't see me just this old result... but now I know exactly what her criteria is I can confidently provide those blood results twice a year ๐whilst freestyling in between
๐ค I get far less threats when I just zip it... honestly there is no point trying to discuss things as their understanding is so limited
My TSH is the same but luckily she concedes after our initial meeting that I won't be fobbed off and treated on that, after I requested my pituitary should be investigated...but on my fT3&4 results, though she never requests a fT3 result ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I SOOOO love it when they say theyโll do it by phone rather than face-to-face and then sign me off for another 12 months of T3! Allows me to give full flight to any facial expressions I feel like making as theyโre waffling on, also saves me an 80mile round trip and two hours travelling time that can be much better spent doing other stuffโฆ like weeding the garden or summat!
Love phone consults. My last three telephone appts have been a combined 5 min and that includes confirming itโs me 3 times and yep my face is a picture. ๐ But I get to say things like oh my levels are perfect, thatโs great as I increased my dose to 10mcg instead of five just after our last review so Iโll leave it at that if you can inform GP. All else good, thanks for your time bye now. Exit phone right!
I think my advice to people would be to become as knowledgeable as you can about our condition but be very cagey about sharing it with medics then you don't have to wrestle with their ego too! ๐
That is great advice. I learned that the hard way, since I had been spoiled with a doctor who was a great health partner and then was thrown into the harsh reality after moving. How I miss that doctor, who actually was open to what I had to say.
I often think these sorts of doctors have missed their calling, they should be politicans. Who also spout absolute BS, make it up as they go along, treat the public with contempt and think we're stupid.
Well that's a new line in bollocks, medics usually blame high FT3 for heart problems and bone health, not middle of the range FT4. She doesnt even know her hormones from her elbow. Honestly I'd love to secretly record these sessions and then play them back so they can actually hear the word salad they spout and expect us to swallow.
Luckily she hasn't read the page on fT3 it would seem as it hasn't been mentioned since our first meeting and she doesn't test it!!
It is hilarious when you go over it afterwards and writing it here just makes me laugh out loud, though I think it's good to pre-warn others of the surreal nature of these encounters
I'm feeling quite lucky really now I know how to ride this pony๐ค
That sounds like the same conversation I had with my NHS endocrinologist. However, I couldn't keep it zipped, never could, probably never will. She retorted with a tirade about how long she had studied, at every level, and dissed every other contested opinion, as not being medically trained!
I got my repeat meds, though no increase.
Only 6 months.
I will have to endure another disagreement in September.
I can well recommend the ๐ค approach... I have enough flexibility if I am prompt requesting my prescriptions to alter my dose to suit me..... why do they think we need to be medically trained to read the latest papers ๐
Join the club! A couple of years ago, I secured an appointment with an Endo and before i'd even got to see him, he emailed me that if I was going to ask for T3, to forget it! I canceled the appointment. One GP, when talking on the phone to me when I questioned her, replied, "I'm the doctor!" 'Experts' can be so arrogant. and occasionally, wrong.
More often than occasionally, I believe. Some have done real and irreversible damage to my body. In North America the third leading cause of death is medical error (after CVD and cancer). I perceive doctors as a potential danger to my health, which makes me obsessed with collecting medical knowledge as it pertains to me. An interesting book is "Undoctored" by William Davis. But, unfortunately we are dependent on their good will. That means groveling away and keeping a neutral facial expression (if you can not muster a rapt expression) or face the unpleasant consequences. Blessed are the ones who have found the rare diamond of a doctor. They shall inherit good physical and mental health.
