combined therapy help

Hi

a little advise if possible:

normally levo 125mg and thybon 5mg. A new endo has taken me off thybon to try and work out if I have diabetes inspidius (water balance issues). I think I was slightly too hyper but 3 weeks later and I feel terrible - weight gain, constipation, no apetite. I don’t think single therapy works for me. This endo was out of date and not good. I have new appt with different endo in August.

Does anyone have experience of used thybon every other day? Or another idea. Combined therapy had worked steady for 3 years.

Background - graves. rai back in 2010-2014.

Thanks

What was the reason for stopping your T3?

T3 cannot be taken every other day. Who has suggested you do that? Its possible to do that with Levo as its a storage hormone but T3 works immediately and your body wouldnt know if its coming or going if you tried every other day with T3.

Do you have a copy of your latest blood results that you can share with us? You are legally entitled to a printed copy of your results, ask at GP reception. In England you can get the NHS app and ask for permission to see your blood results on that by asking at GP’s reception.

When hypo we get low stomach acid which means we cannot absorb vitamins well from our food, regardless of a great diet. For thyroid hormone to work well we need OPTIMAL levels of vitamins.

Have you recently or could you ask your GP to test levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3? Private tests are available, see link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/testing/priva...

There is also a new company offering walk in& mail order blood tests in London, Kent, Sussex & Surrey areas. Check to see if there is a blood test company near you. onedaytests.com/products/ul...

Only do private tests on a Monday or Tuesday to avoid postal delays.

Thank you Jaydee - just your reply has helped. I didn’t realise t3 couldn’t be stored. The endo suggested the drop as maybe borderline diabetes inspidus. He was v out of date on the studies he quoted and completely anti combined therapy.

I am going to go back to my holistic doct and ask for some combination that is inbetween until I can get to the endo.

Thank you

It sounds like hes just anti T3 and I havent heard of it being contraindicated for diabetes.

What were your blood results?

Its essential to raise vitamin levels to OPTIMAL also.

Hello DancerLisboa and welcome to the forum :

A fully functioning working thyroid would be supporting you on a daily basis with trace elements of T1, T2 and calcitonin + a measure of T3 at around 10 mcg + a measure of T4 at around 100 mcg -

with T3 said to be around 4 times more powerful than T4.

T4 is a pro-hormone and needs to be converted in your body into T3 which is the active hormone that runs all your bodily functions and the thyroid is responsible for your full body synchronisation from your physical ability through to your mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual well being, your inner central heating system and your metabolism.

No thyroid hormone replacement works well until your core strength vitamins and minerals - those of ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D are up and maintained at optimal levels.

Do you have any blood tests that prompted this endo to stop your T3 Thybon ?

Do you have any blood tests you can share of your T3 and T4 before starting adding in the T3?

Was this T3 Thybon self-sourced or through the NHS ?

If you care to share, we can read the blood test results and ranges for you and offer considered opinion as to your next step back to better health.

Having stopped even just 5mcg T3 - ( Thybon ) you will have felt the negatives pretty quickly - and taking any form of T3 requires a regular daily dose - you can not take it every other day - why would you want to do this ?

More than likely since you have Graves Disease and are post RAI thyroid ablation you will need at least a dose comparable to that which your thyroid once supported you with.

I too have Graves and went through RAI thyroid ablation back in 2005 and became much more unwell some years later when on T4 monotherapy and dosed to have a TSH in the range.

Some people can get by on T4 only :

Others find T4 seems to stop working at some point in time and that by adding in a little T3 - likely at a similar dose to that which their thyroid once supported them with - their metabolism is kick started, and their health and well being improved.

Others can't tolerate T4 at all and need to take T3 only - Liothyronine.

Whilst others find their health restored taking Natural Desiccated Thyroid which contains all the same known hormones as that of the human thyroid gland and derived from pig thyroids, dried and ground down into tablets, referred to as grains.

We do now have some research which I feel you need to know of :-

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/338...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/306...

I found the most well rounded of all I researched - 10 years after RAI thyroid ablation - as I knew nothing when diagnosed and never told much - is that of Elaine Moore - both books and website - elaine-moore.com

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
