Why does T3 lower T4?

Please could someone explain why taking Liothyronine when using T4/T3 combination therapy lowers T4? Does this always happen? Thanks for your help.

Here we go again!

Another paper that raises the problem of unsuitable T4 treatment and the value of combination therapy. It's behind a paywall, but the summary here I feel is very encouraging. Combination therapy is becoming if not respectable at least worthy of examination. We definitely have progress here.

arenaviral immunotherapies induce potent T cell responses in novel combinations and against tumor self-antigens

In this analysis, replicating arenaviral immunotherapy was sequentially combined with adoptively transferred TCR transgenic T cells, which resulted in tumor cures in all mice receiving combination therapy, with 100 percent survival at the end of the experiment (60 days after administration)."

Eltroxin

I’m on T4/T3 combination therapy, and up until all of this drama I was actually doing pretty well. So I am now trying to find out info about alternative T4 medications such as eltroxin. Do NHS GP’s prescribe this? And can you source it privately? If so how much would it cost roughly? Many thanks:)

Why test 6 - 8 weeks after dose change?

Also, is this stability dependent on therapy - eg. does T4 mono take the same length of time to stabilize as T3 mono or T4 / T3 combination therapy? Are there any studies to confirm this? Thanks!

Another useful article showing minimal adverse effect dosing with T3 in addition to T4

T3 in combination gave better health signs when T4 only was given in therapy. T3 only therapy is still a step medicine won't yet tread, but at least combination therapy is now seriously looked at ORIGINAL RESEARCH article Front.

Combination T4/t3 therapy discussed

Future clinical trials using LT4 + T3 tablets better suited for combination therapy will resolve the outstanding research questions relating to the place of LT4 + T3 combination therapy in the management of hypothyroidism.

Another study on T3 given to women with ongoing symptoms

Design Female hypothyroid patients with residual symptoms on LT4 monotherapy or combination LT4/LT3 therapy received LT3 and LT4 monotherapy, respectively for 12 weeks in a non-blinded randomized crossover study. Methods Fifty-nine patients aged 18-65 years were included.

Glimpses of understanding

Given this discrepancy, it is important that any trial of combination therapy be continued only as long as a patient benefit is being enjoyed. Monitoring for adverse effects, particularly in older or frail individuals, is necessary and combination therapy should not be used during pregnancy.

The Swinging Pendulum in Treatment for Hypothyroidism: From (and Toward?) Combination Therapy

This was refreshing to see. I hope it does not take the average 15 years for this to be implemented in medical practice. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fendo.2019.00446/full

Combination Therapy Rescues Neurons Suffering From Toxic Aggregates Of Alpha Synuclein In Cell Culture

In addition, impaired cells in cell culture were rescued by a combination therapy of two drugs. One is an inexpensive blood pressure medicine. The other is a member of a family of toxic compounds being tried as cancer chemotherapy.

Another commentary on thyroid function treatment and combination therapy outcome

There seems to be an increasing awareness that something is wrong in diagnosing thyroid therapy sufficiency by TSH alone. This commentary is part of that discussion. However it still parrots the line that FT3 levels are unstable with T3 treatment, and that FT4 +TSH should remain the mainstay of treatment
