The new production and current stock available of Thyroid S has a slightly harder shell coating than prior to 2020 and some forum members have found they can get by crushing or biting the tablet - but it's not as easy as it once was -
I don't have this issue and have always swallowed my NDT as per instructions :
Hopefully others will be around and tell you for sure :
Yes just cut one and it does have hard shell so that rules out any chance of it melting under tongue. How long, before and after eating food, is it best to take NDT?
My gut health is not that great so i am concerned about NTD being absorbed.
All thyroid hormone tablets are designed to be swallowed because
a) they need stomach acid to detach them from the fillers in the pill
b) the molecules are too large to pass the blood/mucus barrier.
If you let it dissolve under your tongue, all that happens is it is slowly swallowed and ends up in the stomach, anyway, it doesn't go directly into the blood as with medication that is designed to be taken sublingually. And if you eat straight after, the risk is that the thyroid hormone will bind with some of the ingredients of what you eat/drink and will be lost. There was a good post about that just recently, but I can't find it.
I'm probably not being very helpful but I'm pretty blasé about taking Thyroid-S. I was told many years ago that the faff that's required for taking synthetic Levo is not necessary when using NDT / DTE. NDTs / DTEs are the complete thyroglobulin molecule . That is a complex molecule and has to go through various enzyme and peptide processing steps to release the actual thyroid hormone wrapped within the molecule . So it is broken down and absorbed much further down the digestive tract (and we can't really know what other food may be in process there also .) NDTs/ DTEs therefore are naturally 'slow release' in our system. I think at some time I heard that the hard casing round Thyroid-S is to ensure the thyroid molecules get down to the correct part of the digestive tract before being released / absorbed for use.
I think of it this way: when NDTs were introduced, they were a supplement to replace eating chopped up bits of actual raw thyroid gland which was the earlier treatment - i.e. food. Not a synthetic purified chemical, which is fussy about what other chemicals are present.
Personally my habit is get up, get 3 tablets, crunch a bit then swallow (I don't know why I crunch, it's now just habit ) then have breakfast and lots of coffee. Works for me.....
I take Armour thyroid, I get up, take 1 tablet, crunch it a bit swallow, go to the bathroom then have black tea with milk and a tsp of monkfruit, half an hour or so after I take the Armour thyroid. Do you think this is okay? My TSH is almost nothing, but I don't have any symptoms. My FT3 and FT4 are in range.
It is said that polyfenols interact with thyroid meds. They are in black tea and coffee. I'm not too strict with this, but you might want to test for yourself if there is a difference.
It doesn't dissolve, as others have said. I did not have much effect of the latest ones with the harder coating, so I now thoroughly chew the tablets and have more effect now. You can add some dextrose for better absorption.
