Hi, my husband was diagnosed with Hashimotos approximately two years ago. About 12 months ago he started to suffer from a sweaty smell while in bed of a night. Over time it has dramatically increased to the point where we have had to throw quilts, pillows etc away, and we are at the point where the bed has to be changed every two days. He has seen an endocrinologist and he said it’s nothing to do with Hashimotos, his GP said it is but there is nothing that can be done. Previously, my hubby has never suffered any body odour/ sweating . He doesn’t physically sweat , it’s just an odour. I would appreciate any advice. TIA .
Body Odour - Hashimotos : Hi, my husband was... - Thyroid UK
Body Odour - Hashimotos
Hypos are known not to sweat freely. It kind of does not surprise me that this might be associated with your husband’s situation. It would be best if you post all his blood results as he may still be very under medicated from your description. TSH, FT4 and FT3. If you are relying on your GP for these results, they are likely to be incomplete. You might have to organise private tests. Check out Thyroid UK website itself for ‘money off codes’.
what are his most recent thyroid and vitamin results
How much levothyroxine is he taking
When were vitamins last tested
Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine
For full Thyroid evaluation he needs TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum, especially with Hashimoto’s
Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Has he had liver and kidney function tests?
Must admit my experience of males is that they do seem to turn bedding yellowish which like you say is impossible to remove 😕
Sluggish/below par liver function might be involved - our liver is the first organ of detoxification and our skin is the second organ of detoxification.
He could try Magnesium chloride spray, particularly in armpits - that should stop the unpleasant odour and will also give mag a boost. Avoid deodorants and anti antiperspirants.
Great article Batty1 - it lists HYPER as a usual suspect. Hm!
Stella-Elly Share whatever blood tests you have, this forum will be able to glean something helpful from them.
Also - what other symptoms does he have, what hormone replacement and supplements is he taking, what have the past two years been like, and did anything else change 12 months ago that you can think of?
Did he start supplementing Selenium? The late great Diogenes stated that if you have over range Selenium, you will smell like an old goat? Too much Selenium can also smell of garlic, I I I I think possibly as a garlic taste or smell in the mouth.
Usually with Hashimotos, we have high Prolactin. High Prolactin can make you sweat, especially at night. It is cycling throughout the day, but is highest when we sleep, but I think especially between 1a.m-5 a.m. Males and females however are different.
There are some long posts I made previously on the forum about this , but I am not tech savvy enough to direct you to them.
If you start googling and asking questions to Google regarding Prolactin, and the difference in Prolactin levels between males and females you will be able to access plenty of information. I think his Prolactin levels may be rising, but I wouldn't imagine your G.P. would test them for you as it is not done at G.P. level. A Prolactin test is usually the domain of an Endocrinologist.
