I can only describe this as an inner unease, it’s physical and it is accompanied by a hissing in my ear, sometimes this eases and I can feel my body is more at rest but it can rave up before a headache. I feel it is my body looking for something/lacking - could this be my low thyroid hormones/T3? I didn’t have it until this all kicked off.
I have been started on 50mg of T4 over 2 weeks ago, does this take longer to fully work?
Many thanks!

Oh, I know exactly what you mean! That is something I felt for many years before diagnosis (turns out I've been hypo since I was about eight and not diagnosed until I was 55!) I tried all sorts of things to ease that feeling - nutritional supplements, exercise, and some things I won't go into! But the feeling persisted. So, pretty certain that it was the T3 my body was craving.

Anxiety and tinnitus. Hypo symptoms. Although tinnitus can be caused by a lot of things.

Well, it depends. 50 mcg is only a starter dose and 2 weeks is only a very short time in thyroid terms. But it depends on the person. Some people do feel better pretty quickly, but for others it takes more time. We have to be patient, I'm afraid.
When did they tell you to go back for a retest? At that point you should get an increase in dose of 25 mcg. And with every increase, things should get better. So, don't despair. You'll get there one day.
Thank you GG your message means a lot. I’m sorry it took so long for you to be treated, it must have been truly awful - such a long time not knowing!!
The pulse tinnitus came on when my body had bouts of this crazy body anx stress (only way I can describe it) and it’s in motion with my body on overdrive and iv noticed when my body stuff has eased then so does the tinnitus - I’m pretty certain it’s linked! I have consult again beg of May, I had to go private AGAIN but he’s good and if I need T3 I know it won’t be a problem. Thing is my TSH has never went above range - though near it even though T4 below range and low T3 and I wonder do I have ‘central hypo’? Tks again GG I think I’m going in right direction😁
To know if you have central hypo you need to have some of the other pituitary hormones tested. You could start by testing cortisol, because cortisol is triggered by ATCH, produced by the pituitary, just like TSH triggers thyroid hormone production.
Week 4 is about the worst time as your body is just adjusting to the new regime and realizing is doesn't have enough of what it needs, this feeling often happens when altering dose, stick with it and like GG says as you get nearer your optimal dose things settle down if you convert well 🤗
So many of us have had similar symptoms FoxyTed. Levo isnt a ‘quick fix’ unfortunately…. You will need to retest 6-8 weeks after being on 50mcg, then slowly increase upwards to reach your ‘sweet spot’ when you feel most well. It’s good to keep in mind that when GPs say ‘within range’ this might not be the same as optimal; it’s always useful to share results on the forum for further advice.
Have you had key thyroid vitamins tested (Ferritin, folate, B12 and vit D)? Having these optimal supports thyroid health.
Hi Buddy, yes all my vits etc are fine after working on these through this long road, so it’s now down to T meds. Yes I know the within range crap - iv threw that T-shirt away!! My folate was on the floor and they said with in range so if one doesn’t know about lab numbers when they ring for results then they’re in deep crap!! Thank you, as I said you all give me hope😁
Really feeling for you. I developed anxiety when I started on 50mcg a few years ago. I was totally uptight, sleep was shocking, and, yes, I had that tinnitus thing too.
My experience was that I felt worse on meds to begin with than I did before. I understand it’s because Levothyroxine doesn’t top up our bodies’ natural hormone levels, it replaces them. So we can end up with less until it adjusts, and feel the consequences. No doctor will tell you this and I wish I’d understood it when I was first diagnosed as it would have saved me a lot of grief.
My advice is to be really kind to yourself right now. And be really proactive in making sure you a) get a follow up appointment with your doctor in 6-8 weeks and b) you get a dosage increase at that time.
Thank you Waystar, it is just so unbelievably helpful to read all this! It can be frightening if one doesn’t know what’s going on and lovely people on here really help with this. Yes I have an apt beg of May and he is good so I’m blessed. I have been to hell and back this 3 years not knowing what was wrong thinking I wasn’t going to recover from it all but now there’s light. Mind you I’ll prob be on here again on bad days😁
My pleasure. Yes, it’s totally frightening when you don’t know what’s going on! Happily, you’ve found this forum. I’ve had awesome support here and definitely encourage you to keep coming back, posting, learning etc. Take care!
It’s a bumpy ride for some of us with introducing thyroid treatment. Hang in there. Dose stabilises anywhere between 4-18 weeks in my personal experience.
Bear in mind that sometimes it’s the brand you are using that are causing issues, or the treatment may simply be wrong for you at this time.
P.S. on lower doses of levothyroxine I developed ear infection, and I had a very strange fizzy popping sensation begin my nose/head that I could feel and hear.
