Tiromel efficacy

sub_sandwich_yummy profile image

I recently started using Tiromel after using another brand. I can’t tell if I got fake Tiromel or if Tiromel is just not effective. I was taking 50-75 mcg/day on the previous brand (and I felt great) and l’m currently on 175-200 mcg/day with Tiromel and now my hypo symptoms are creeping back in. Anyone else have problems with Tiromel? Here is a pic of the Tiromel.

People who are used to T3 other than Tiromel, and who have never used Tiromel before have often complained that, compared to what they have taken previously, it is weak.

You could try increasing your dose a quarter tablet at a time to see if that helps.

If you have got a fake batch I would be surprised because Tiromel is quite cheap, and so the profit margins on fakes would be low.

Are they definitely hypo symptoms? There can be a strange overlap sometimes with over-medicated symptoms. Are you able to get some blood tests done to see what your level of FT3 actually is?

How much T3 are you taking

How much levothyroxine

Only ever increase levothyroxine by 25mcg maximum per day and then retest 6-8 weeks later

Or increase T3 by 5mcg per day and wait 6-8 weeks to retest

How quickly have you increased from 50mcg/75mcg Levo per day to 175mcg/200mcg per day

1-2 years? Or shorter?

I take it you are on T3-only.

I use Tiromel and need a supraphysiological dose....I'm happy with it

I initially used Mexican Cynomel which is more potent

I agree with humanbean...if someone wanted to fake T3 I doubt it would be Tiromel

The foil strip looks fine

175-200 mcg/day is a large dose of T3 unless you have a form of Thyroid Hormone Resistance which is rare

I have a form of Thyroid Hormone Resistance and reached 212.5mcg before I recognised I was overmedicated

I was experiencing the converse effect of the hormone

Are you quite sure this is not what has happened?

What symptoms do you have?

How quickly have you been increasing the dose?

You are possible overmedicated.

I was once told to ensure I took the most effective dose not the maximum I could tolerate! At the beginning I did the latter, it's easily done especialy if you raise the dose too high and too fast

Once we take large doses of T3 blood tests are no longer reliable....the available tests were not devised for this use.

Instead we have to listen to our body and use good old fashioned clinical evaluation/signs and symptoms to find our therapeutic dose

50 -75mcg daily, now 175 - 200mcg, is a huge jump.

When I overmedicated a medic told me to stop taking the T3 for a few days ( I waited 4 days until I realised I should introduce it again) then start again on 50mcg daily. It won't do any harm

I then increased the dose by 6.25mcg after 2 weeks....and continued to increase by 6.25mcg every 2 weeks until my symptoms improved.

I was also told by a thyroid scientist that if symptoms had existed for a long time the damage done may not all resolve. In my case my T3 had been low for decades so I've had to settle for the best outcome I could achieve.

It is a long slow often bumpy process so patience is essential as is regular/ weekly monitoring....resting heart rate, anxiety, hand tremor, oxygen saturation, blood pressure.

Good luck!

11 days ago I started using Tiromel instead of Uni-pharma T3. I take 12.5mcg a day. I immediately noticed it seemed "slightly different" i.e. a little bit stronger (versus your experience of it being weaker). It may be related to each person's particular sensitivity to different fillers and binders. It may be that the manufacturing process of Uni-pharma T3 was not as efficient i.e. some tablets sometimes seemed to have no effect - all speculation on my part however.

The picture you provided appears to be the genuine product - does the otherside show 25 x 25mcg in a pattern of 7, 5, 6, 7 - are the pills white and scored down the middle?

Just for info, my Tiromel was purchased in person at a Turkish Pharmacy.

Just out of interest, was it easy to buy at the turkish pharmacy? And how much for a pack? I used to go to Greece to buy the uni pharma over the counter, but from everything I've read on here, that no longer seems to be a thing.

It was 20 euro for 10 boxes (100 x 25mcg each box). (cash sale would have been 18 euro). It was no problem to buy it - it's not illegal in anyway but a person buying an "extraordinary" supply MIGHT have an issue on re-entry to their home country - I think in the UK it is permitted to import "prescription" medicines for personal use for 3 months.

I live in Greece - I can confirm that (for now anyway) Uni-pharma is no longer being produced.

I hope you used to come to Greece for more than just the T3 :)

Thank you. The last trip to Greece was purely for the T3 unfortunately, but before that we did a couple of cruises that included various parts of Greece, which were all lovely.

Looks like I might need to find a cruise that incorporates Turkey! I'm very much a fan of buying over the counter, as at least you know what you're getting and that it's legitimate. I am very fortunate to be prescribed T3, however my endo won't up my prescription to cover what I currently take, so having to supplement. I do have quite a stock of uni-pharma left from our last trip, but at some point in the not too distant future will need to consider an alternative.

Do you have any ideas why uni-pharma is no longer being produced? And what are Greek people doing who may have been prescribed T3? Can you just not get any at all now, which seems like a nightmare?

Apart from the big story that people still don't seem to quite get, the closure of the Greek factory has been variously ascribed to "it's too cheap" (and the Greek gov won't allow the company to increase it's price), there's a shortage of raw material, too much of our production disappears to the black market .

I can only hope that any locals who have the prescription (that now can't be fulfilled) will be savvy enough to find what they need. Or their families will find a solution. It's not only T3 that is an issue here - many other regularly prescribed medicines are no longer available.

My Tiromel also seems ineffective. I'm taking 37 mg/day. Will try upping the dose. Mine does not look like your picture. Sorry, I don't have camera to take picture, but it's red font on silver background. It says T3, not tiromel and UNI-PHARMA. "T3 Tiromel Abdi Ibrahim Liothyronine Sodium L-Triodotironin thyroid hormone" is email return address

On the web page, it says "T3 Uni-Pharma Greece Liothyronine Sodium Cytomel 30 tablets 25 mg" and by email they say," Your Tiromel order has been received!

I paid $121, including shipping for 4 boxes of Tiromel T3 by Abdi Ibrahim Liothyronine Sodium 100 tablets 25 mcg/tab it says T3 and uni-pharma. Tiromel nowhere on box or inside packets.

Uni-pharma T3 has 30 x 25mcg. The box is mostly white on the left hand side with a large T3 printed in black and just under that it says liothyronine, then sodium under that (typographically text aligned to the left). At the bottom of the white half there is a UNI-PHARMA logo, white text pinkish/red background.

Half way down on the left side of the packet in pinkish/red text it says 25μg. Near the top of the left hand side it says 30tablets. On the other side of the box all is the same except it says 30 Δισκία.

On the web page, it says "T3 Uni-Pharma Greece Liothyronine Sodium Cytomel 30 tablets 25 mg" and by email they say," Your Tiromel order has been received!

That all sounds a bit odd - can you send me a link to the web page (by private message probably).

Tiromel comes in 25 x 25mcg blisters.

I think the site is "iffy". There are many opportunistic scammers everywhere (for everything).
