Hi all,

Neurologist, aims to prescribe propranolol for migraine which I have had since i was 9 years old (now 72) but has got worse since I was diagnosed with AFib in 2020. He offered me propranolol but i'm not sure if its okay to opt for this medication because i take levo. Question: is propranolol contraindicated when taking levo?

Really would appreciate some feedback.

have a rewarding day

Propranolol is used to treat HYPERthyroid patients as it slows uptake of Ft4 and slows conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

Propranolol

Will also possibly lower magnesium as affects Parathyroid hormone levels

Drugs that may decrease PTH include cimetidine and propranolol.

Hello DizzyD. This may be out of left field but our daughter had migraines every day for a number of years+taking daily meds. They'd wipe her out. She had also been diagnosed with IBS by consultant. Long story short, migraines caused by dairy +IBS by gluten after appt with Dr Sarah Myhill. Went dairy free+gluten free+the improvement was astonishing. She is now 41+been off migraine meds for about 15 yrs .

Hi there I also have had migraine for many years mine caused by hormonal changes I was taking Propranolol many years to try to reduce the weekly attacks I was having and yes it did help. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid several years later and have taken Levothyroxine for many years. My doctor did not make any changes to my Propranolol and so I stayed on it until recently. My Migraines also worsened if my Thyroid symptoms returned ie my meds needed adjusted and I soon noticed the Thyroid issue did affect my Migraines greatly I guess this does make sense as Thyroid is also a hormone issue. I would like to point out that in recent months a significant change occurred with my Migraines! I had been ill for many months and was then admitted to Hospital in October and it turns out I have another autoimmune condition Autoimmune Hepatitis which had unfortunately become very bad and my liver had developed Cirrhosis I am now on Steroids and other drugs for this. During this time I also have been diagnosed with Afib. My Liver Consultant changed my beta blocker as she advised she would replace the Propranolol with another type which would be safer for me now that I have damaged liver this beta blocker Carvedilol 3.125mg is to help the Afib. Now the amazing thing is that since being unwell with liver disease which was going on for almost two years I have had NO migraines! For the first time in 30 years of very bad and frequent attacks! I have been so unwell dealing with the cirrhosis and I am not sure if this is just the big changes in my body have somehow put the Migraine on hold. Of course I am so relieved and praying that Migraines indeed do not return but I know this is very uncertain and will enjoy this time while it does last. I am now going to mention this fact when I next attend my Liver Clinic Nurse on the 8th as it really is a significant and interesting change right? Please be sure you have my complete empathy my Migraines changed my life so much they were so very bad for many years. So I hope this is helpful. As you too now have Afib this would be some helpful information for you.

I do hope you get help soon. If you have any other questions for me let me know.

Anne
