New blood results

Just like to put my latest results here, I’ve been totally worn out lately and I have an appointment tomorrow with my Gp, my fatigue is now off the scale, all I want to do is sleep. I’m really struggling with my Ferritin levels even though I take an Iron supplement and I eat well, I would be really grateful for one of you lovely folk to cast an eye over my results.

What iron supplements

Have you tried Three Arrows

Many members have good results with Three arrows

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

Medichecks iron panel test

medichecks.com/products/iro...

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Updated reference ranges for top of ferritin range depending upon age

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Thank you for your incredible patience while you have been awaiting the outcome of our ferritin reference range review. We conducted this with Inuvi lab, which has now changed the reference ranges to the following:

Females 18 ≤ age < 40 30 to 180

Females 40 ≤ age < 50 30 to 207

Females 50 ≤ age < 60 30 to 264

Females Age ≥ 60 30 to 332

Males 18 ≤ age < 40 30 to 442

Males Age ≥ 40 30 to 518

The lower limits of 30 are by the NICE threshold of <30 for iron deficiency. Our review of Medichecks data has determined the upper limits. This retrospective study used a large dataset of blood test results from 25,425 healthy participants aged 18 to 97 over seven years. This is the most extensive study on ferritin reference ranges, and we hope to achieve journal publication so that these ranges can be applied more widely.

Folate is deficient

Are you taking daily vitamin B complex

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

Igennus B complex popular option too. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg)

I use iron spray so that it doesn’t affect my tummy. I also take B12 , VitD +K2

So you’re not taking any folate or vitamin B complex?

Iron mouth spray pretty ineffective

I take a marine collagen that has biotin in it. I take the iron spray because someone on here advised it as I have an adverse reaction to tablets, even slow release affect me. I ended up overdosing with the spray so I stopped taking it for a while then used half of the dose. I don’t take a folate supplement but to be honest I get really confused with what I should and shouldn’t take. I’ve just got back from the GPs and he’s not too happy that I have private tests, however I don’t really care what he thinks. He looked at my results and thought everything was fine. After saying that he’s sending me for a chest X-ray, full bloods and poop test. 🤔

Did GP prescribe folic acid for folate deficiency

If not you need to start vitamin B complex now

If GP did prescribe folic acid, then start vitamin B complex once you finish folic acid

Once you start on daily vitamin B complex …..You can then reduce and stop separate B12 and separate biotin

poor conversion of Ft4 to Ft3 leads to low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels results in worse conversion

Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors emailed to you, but within the email a link to download list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3

Ideally choose an endocrinologist to see privately initially and who also does NHS consultations

Your folate is low. All of your symptoms could be from this and low iron. You need to take a B complex if your intake of cooked greens is low.

I actually eat a lot of greens, I could quite easily be a vegetarian, I just can’t understand why it’s constantly low

You'd need to do a dietary analysis to determine how much you are consuming. Adult females require 400 micrograms per day.
