it’s more how hypothyroid you are

Previous post showed you needed increases in Levo and T3

We can only increase one at a time

Personally I would increase levothyroxine first as this should increase Ft4 and Ft3

When were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Do you have Hashimoto’s

Those are all optimal according to this site except for ferritin which Im supplementing

How low was ferritin in last test

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing. It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

If taking supplements, stop 3-5 days before test

I understand, thanks.

How soon does liothyronine have effect on scalp?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toklaea

No hormone changes work quickly

Retest 6/8 weeks after each increase

meanwhile

You may need intense moisturising shampoo

welcome to the forum

What’s wrong with your scalp…..scalp psoriasis?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing

When you say better what is up with your scalp, dryness, itchiness, scaliness etc?

All of those.

dryness, itchiness, scaliness

All of those.

I have never had a problem with my scalp but I did have eczema, mainly on my hands from childhood until well into my 50s. It went away when I started taking high dose vitamin B12. According to my B12 test results I've never had low B12, but I tried it anyway. My eczema disappeared for the first time since I first developed it. If I stop taking B12 again the eczema comes back.

The B12 I take is methylcobalamin, which can be bought in the UK online without a prescription.

.

When I did have eczema I found I had problems tolerating the standard (prescribed) creams and ointments. They all contained lanolin and/or petroleum jelly, (also called petrolatum, vaseline, soft paraffin, and other names). I am sensitive to all of these.

Eventually I was prescribed a product called Elocon scalp lotion. I didn't use it on my scalp, I used it on my hands. It was wonderful stuff, if you can get it. The active ingredient is :

Mometasone furoate 1 mg per 1 gram.

.

I haven't had eczema for several years now, not since I started the high dose methylcobalamin.

What's your b12 levels when supplementing? I was supplementing but it got over range so I stopped.

These days I follow the suggestion on these links for Serum Vitamin B12 :

perniciousanemia.org/b12/le...

perniciousanemia.org/b12/le...

And I usually supplement with methylcobalamin with the occasional use of adenosylcobalamin.

When my levels drop I supplement with 1000 mcg per day, although when my levels go very high I cut down to taking 1000 mcg three days per week.

If I was having an Active B12 test I would aim to keep my result at at least 100 pmol/L or over.
