Been seeing an Endocrinologist privately as after 45 week wait still no appointment on the nhs. After a couple of blood test was tested for prolactin and it came up high Serum prolactin level 1117 mIU/L. Does anyone else make have this issue is it connected to thyroxine?
Now back with GP as can’t afford another visit to a private consultant 😞.

ESSENTIAL to improve all four vitamins to OPTIMUM levels
As you have Hashimoto’s have you had coeliac blood test
ALWAYS worth trying gluten free diet once had coeliac test first
Vast majority of endocrinologists are diabetes specialists and useless for thyroid
Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors but also list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3
Ideally choose an endocrinologist to see privately initially and who also does NHS consultations
The hypothalamus- pituitary- thyroid form the HPT axis, and there can be a positive correlation between prolactin and TSH which is mediated by TRH release (hypothalamus). This means as TSH rises in response to inadequate thyroid hormone levels, prolactin increases also.
Prolactin increases testosterone levels via enhancement of LH but if you allow continued elevated prolactin the opposite will happen as a reduced amount of GnRH suppresses LH resulting in lowered testosterone levels.
Replacing missing thyroid hormones will reverse high levels of both TSH and prolactin. You are already medicating Levothyroxine but your symptoms indicate either you remain under-medicated or your meds aren't working sufficiently. This can be down to a variety of reasons from a simple deficiency of essential co-factors (such as iron, zinc, etc) or because of genetics meaning you have difficulty in utilising the Levo correctly.
If TSH level wasn't high, there is risk that your high prolactin is down to a pituitary tumour and all avenues should be investigated.
If it’s any consolation, back in July I used Randox health to check my sex hormones. Back then my prolactin was 772 mIU/l in a range of 102-496. I was panicked for a moment before reading here that an elevated prolactin reading can occur when un/undermedicated for hypothyroidism. This was my first insight into my prolactin, btw.
I recently retested my sex hormones in November, again using Randox. This time my prolactin was within range at 251 (same range parameters as previously). I started levothyroxine in August and, for information I’m 51 and post menopausal.
