a friend has recommended I drink a coffee creamer made with palm oil to boost my thyroid.

What is the recommendation here please?

I'd start by looking at what else it contains.

(Not promoting Tesco or Coffee Mate but the first I located.)

Glucose Syrup, Palm Kernel Oil, Milk Proteins, Stabilisers (E331, E452), Acidity Regulator (E340), Emulsifiers (E471, E472e), Anti-Caking Agent (E170), Colour (Riboflavin)

tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p...

E331 - Sodium citrates

E452 - Polyphosphates

E340 - Potassium phosphates

E471 - Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids

E472e - DATEM (diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and diglycerides)

E170 - Calcium carbonate

Maybe there are some which don't have all these ingredients? I really don't know.

Possibly look a bit further at Palm Kernel Oil?

Could go here and then elsewhere as you see fit:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_...

Adding:

Just to note, the original post referred to Palm Oil but the product I found has Palm Kernel Oil - similar but different.

I thought palm oil was a no-no environmentally?

It is!

Absolutely! My son lived in Brunei for some time and the burning of forests was devastating! A pall of black smoke would hang over the area for weeks and cause all sorts of problems, not least for the wildlife which was displaced by these palm oil estates. He hated them and won’t use anything containing palm oil! Neither will I!

Hi Distressedthyroid,

I'm curious has your friend said why they think it'll boost your thyroid?

I think your friend is probably confused. If that were true, I think we'd all know about it by now. :)

No to Palm Oil. The planting is destroying the rain forests of the world. More importantly it's bad for you too.

I'm thinking they may be suggesting palm oil with it being a saturated fat? Though you'd be better off eating butter, olive oil or coconut oil.

Palm oil is best avoided as Calceolaria and greygoose point out.

Not sure why they're suggesting a coffee creamer? Do you consume a lot of coffee? 🤔

Without knowing why someone suggested using coffee creamer of any kind, I would have suggested actual, real cream.

I have one coffee a day for breakfast and I use double cream with it.

I live on coffee during the day and I get my milk from the local farm… in glass bottles with at least 2 inches of cream on the top when it settles! 😋 A little more expensive than the watered down stuff from Tesco’s (other supermarkets are available) but totally worth it! The cows are all in the fields, summer and winter, so on grass all the time.

just two cups a day. I think the replies have confirmed my sceptism.

Is this suggestion in relation to the palmitic acid (PA) in palm oil if so the studies examining the association between PA and thyroid function appear to remain sparse.

Maybe worth considering.....palm oil plantations are pushing into the heart of some of the world’s most culturally and biologically diverse ecosystems.

Are you still taking 75mcg Teva?

Some people cannot tolerate the mannitol in Teva.

Rather than chasing jars of coffee creamer which are full of additives I'd be inclined to the change brand of levo and adjust the dose.

First have a full thyroid test to include...

TSH, FT4, FT3, vit D, vit B12,folate, ferritin and thyroid antibodies TPO and Tg

Test should be done after at least 6 weeks on a steady dose of hormone, at 9am and at least an hour away from food and drinks

Post those current results if you wish advice

Depending on those results you will possibly need to increase your dose.

Sorry....this probably isn't the response you'd hoped for!

Others may pop in with different suggestions.
