Falling asleep after taking meds in the morning

Hey all,

Does anyone experience fatigue after taking thyroid meds in the morning?

I take 90 t4 and 23 t3 in Armour and Thybon in the morning and I am very tired after taking it. And then at 2 pm I am very fatigued again and potentially in the evening around 7 pm.

Trying to understand what I'm doing wrong.

Main symptoma are: fatigue, dry hair that falls out, water retention, low moods, dry nose mouth eyes, blurry vision at times, cognitive issues etc.

Nutrients all optimal (high in range) including ferritin over range after iron IV 3 weeks ago.

My latest results:

Ft4 29%

Ft3 63%

24 hours after dosing.

I seem to need more t3 as I recently lowered it only by a smidgen and put on 2 kilos on in 2 weeks, feels like water retention.

When I up that t3, I lose some water weight and my stomach is flatter, but then I get jitters, insomnia, anxiety, hunger etc.

My iron has been addressed, my rt3 is below midrange.

What's left to check is dose balance between t3 and t4, taking it in one go instead of splitting, cortisol (was lowish 2 out of 5 measurements during the day).

I used to add Levo to Armour, my ft3 ft4 were high in range and was no better.

Thank you!

Hey there -

So is this all 1 dose in the morning -

and can you please specify the actual dose of Armour and T3 Thybon you are taking -

eg - how many grains of Armour + ' x ' mcg T3 ?

Hey pennyannie, Thank you, of course - 2.375 grains of Armour and 2.5mcg Thybon.

Ruled out iron issues, cortisol saliva was 7 and 9% of range morning and afternoon, very low.

Even if I increase t3 or Armour by a crumb, my labs go up substantially (e.g. from 40 to 71% after adding only 2.5 t3😳), I lose water and I'm overdosed, I lower by a crumb, I'm hypo.

Ok - thanks - I think I must have misread something or maybe my eyes are not too good today ?

So around 23 T3 and 90 T4 from the Armour plus a crumb of 2.50 synthetic T3.

Looking back you feel better suited taking Armour and saw a post where you thought you were pretty much ok with a T3 at 5.80 - 73 % and a T4 at 44 % and from memory think that was on 2 + 1/2 grains + a little T4 ?

I wonder if high iron - as after an infusion - skews results ?

You seem to have been at around 2 + 1/2 grains for a long time with fluctuating symptoms - there are some people with Hashimoto's who can't tolerate NDT as it's introducing more natural thyroid for your imune system to attack - and these people need to take the synthetic treatment options.

Could this be an AI issue for you ?

Thank you 😊 I had to fix typos in my post sorry!

I'm taking 21 t3 and 90 t4 in Armour plus 2.5 t3 in Thybon.

That feeling better on Armour and T4 didn't last at all, I've given it 5 months on that specific one dose.

I had tests before and infusion and again now, it's all the same now. Sadly iron didn't seem to do anything so far apart from raising ferritin a lot, symptoms of fatigue are still the same.

I don't think its AI, I have taken Armour for many yrs before, same level of antibodies and felt amazing.

Then I stopped tolerating it.

So we did iron IV and it didn't do anything.

Next is tackling low cortisol and doing a trial of hydrocortisone.

Then maybe splitting the dose as synth t3 is faster acting. I'd want to also try lowering Armour and potentially adding more t3.

Adding t4 always caused many issues.

The good thing now is I sleep first time in 6 years on lower Armour and more t3. When I took more t4 I couldn't sleep. Pretty much since April this year I can fall asleep and stay asleep 😴

Well sleep is vitally important so at least you have found some benefits :

There has been some issues with potency on some NDT brands and batches -

and then with Hashimoto's you're liable to these swings in symptoms anyway :

Take good care :

Hi, I think, but it's not regular so can't be sure, that I feel sleepy after taking T3 when I haven't slept deeply enough through the night. I've never seen anyone else post about this though so it could be coincidence. T3 does seem to improve the quality of my sleep, I usually take it around 6 am then sleep well for an hour or so but feel better if I wake up at 3 - 4 am and take the T3 then, it seems to be followed by good deep refreshing sleep. This is only an impression I have, nothing about my body is regular so I'm never sure of anything.

Have you tried taking a dose at bedtime if it helps you sleep?

Hi Lalatoo, yes, I have tried taking the T3 at night, it wakes me up. When I have to drive to collect family from the airport late at night I take the T3 just before setting off or on the journey. Odd that isn't it, that during the day and early morning it puts me to sleep but wakes me up at night.

Great point, thanks! I might try taking it earlier. I don't split my dose, do you?

Hallo again Incoguto, I do split my dose, I have never tried the 3 am protocol. I see Alwayssearching below has the same experience as you. I had wondered if it was because we are running low on T3 and it takes a while to get levels up again after taking the dose but since you take yours all at once that doesn't fit. Maybe for you splitting your dose would prevent the jitters etc that sound to me (not a medical professional) like a symptom of too much at once?

Hey! May I ask how you split your dose? I wake up, I feel okay, and as soon as I take meds I feel weird and then very tired, have to sleep.

Yes, of course, however I don't think of myself as knowledgeable but I did have a great, supportive endocrinologist who prescribes T3 (he's now in Dubai!!). The instructions are to split my dose of 40mcg per day of T3 into 20 mcg early morning, 10 mcg late morning and 10 mcg no later than 5 pm. I feel best if I take the early morning dose at around 3.00 am but I don't wake up on purpose to take it then so it only happens a few times a week. Naturally I wake around 6.00 am and that's more usually when I take the first dose. The second dose moves around according to when I eat or have coffee (which varies according to work/friends/dog walking etc) and the final one varies a little for the same reasons. If I miss the late morning dose completely (eg forget!) then I take 20 mcg around 3 pm. As mentioned before, I often feel sleepy after taking the T3 and sleep very well after the early morning dose even if that's only for the hour from 6 - 7 am. So, I'm sorry, I don't think this answer will have helped you much, if at all. It's not a blood sugar thing is it? Given the timing I wondered if it's after meals you feel sleepy? I also think that low B12 or Folate can cause daytime sleepiness but am not sure about that. Best of luck in finding the answer.

You do? I wonder if this means too much t3 or just t3 having this effects on some people
