Having seen an Endo privately, he has prescribed three months of Liothyronine 5mcg to take once a day alongside 100mcg of thyroxine to see if my side effects improve..
The GP refused to sanction it and has asked the Endo to prescribe privately, and if I show improvement after the three months, the GP will then accept it and prescribe.
I have the prescription, and sent it to Roseway. The lab has said what I have been prescribed is not a generic form-
"As there is no brand specific, it would be Generic which would be
The Liothyronine on your prescription is the generic brand this costs £453"
"Any unlicensed medication such at the one I quoted
“Liothyronine SigmaPharm 5mcg and this would cost you £99”
(the grammar leaves something to be desired but you get the drift).
I understood that Liothyronine IS the generic drug, not a branded kind-am I wrong here?
I have to go back to the Endo and ask for the prescription to mention SigmaPharm 5 mcg to get the cheaper cost.
Help! I have been waiting since August for this and now it means further delays!
I suspect they are getting confused. I think Sigmapharm is unlicensed in the UK and so needs to be prescribed by name.In any event I would ask your endocrinologist to prescribe 20 mcg tablets which you can quarter.
You will probably find 5 mcg too little to make a difference, you may need 10 mcg, 5 mcg twice daily.
Sigmapharm product is now licensed in the UK in both 5 and 20 microgram dosages.
However, it is utterly confusing because it is sold under the Viatris branding. And, so far as I can see, it is not supplied under Sigmapharm branding.
I'm still struggling to express this in the right words in my medicines documents!
(The imported USA Sigmapharm is in 5, 25 and (possibly) 50 dosages and has different markings on the tablets.)
helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines
helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.
This link takes you to a page which has direct links to the documents from Dropbox and Google Drive, and QR codes to make it easy to access from phones.
The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrix for tablets, oral solutions and liothyronine available in the UK.
