Aspirin Therapy for Hashimotos

Hi all, Ive been given a diagnosis of Hashimotos (finally!) and put on a 6 week course of aspirin 300mgs and omeprazole to reduce inflammation. I am currently hyperthyroid and the aspirin is to reduce inflammation.

Thing is I already take this dose of aspirin and have done for years for pain so dont see what it will do for me. Has anyone else followed this treatment or had experience with it?

jenny876,

Nope, and never heard of asprin being given for Hashimotos. Conventional medicine usually ignores the chronic inflammation that accompanies elevated thyroid antibodies. They say it is either in our head, menopause or ageing symptoms!

I have addressed my own by ensuring Vit D is always optimal, taking fish oils and curcumin. Many members have also found going gluten and/or dairy free has helped.

Omeprazole reduces gastric acid when hypothyroidism can induce low stomach acid and inflammation, so taking a PPI will exacerbate the condition further. Aspirin is also known to irritate the gut. Acid reflux can be caused by too little gastric acid that is required to signal the valve that prevents acid coming up.

Have you been given Levothyoxine?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I was thinking that the aspirin and omeprazole both have a bad effect on the stomach when the dr was talking about it - they were a private consultant that I saw - I have been under the care of the NHS for over 4 years and not had a diagnosis or proper treatment. I do suffer with gastritis anyway so really wasnt happy with the suggested treatment.

I requested levothyroxine myself back in November 2022 and took it on and off until June 2023 - I was apprehensive taking it because the doctors wouldnt say yes take it because you need it - they just said take it if you want to .

Then I got hyperthyroidism in August and was taking Carbimazole until last week because I got a very sore throat. Im getting worse every day and was hoping by going private I would get some treatment but alas it does not seem to be! I have new blood test results but wont be able to get them until tomorrow so will post them when I do :-)

A friend of mine I have unfortunately lost contact with, advised me on one of my days of feeling that overwhelming ‘malaise’ I now realise is from my hypothyroid condition, to take paracetamol or aspirin. I only take it irregularly but I have found it helps incredibly in an acute situation! I would not dream of taking it regularly because the potential to really mess my/your gut would be counter productive. I am doubly intrigued by this friends advice (re: your post) because I know her husband had a pituitary problem but I was too polite to ask what his symptoms/treatment were and was the aspirin suggestion from advice he had received. I did not have my own diagnosis at that time and made no connection whatsoever. So this has been a recommended treatment for you? Do you feel it has worked? There are so many crossed pathways in thyroid symptoms. As I only take aspirin sporadically I can’t help with your actual question, other than to say rather than ‘hyperthyroid’ it sounds like a prolonged Hashimotos flare possibly and that you are hypothyroid. Full thyroid blood tests would be useful for clarifying your situation to the forum administrators to provide more advice.

I am sure that if Asprin worked for the thyroid, we would all be on them! Supplements can help, but the only thing that will help with the lack of thyroid hormone is to replace the thyroid hormone, initially with Levothyroxine. When you are on the right dose, the inflammation will cure itself.

If you search for low stomach acid on here, there are lots of useful threads.

Asprin should not be used like this - it thins the blood and can cause stomach upsets. I have no idea why your GP did not start you on Levothyroxine, but I would go back and ask for it.

Thank you for reply. It was a private endo I saw and I really was not happy with the suggested treatment. I would much prefer to start on Levothyroxine again (took it from Nov 22 - Jun 23). Getting new blood results tomorrow so will post them here to see if Im able to restart levo.

The mind boggles. Gosh you paid this guy for this ‘treatment regime’. Don’t waste any more money. Yes get your blood results up for proper comment.

New results

TSH 4.87 (3.1-6.8)

T4 10.8

T3 3.8

No range given for T4 or T3 just a star beside them both to denote abnormal result.

jenny876 it looks like you have just replied to me. It would be best if you do a new post altogether giving your blood results. Try to find the ranges for your results before posting. You have the TSH results in brackets. You need the same for your T4and T3. You will hopefully access administrators by doing a new post. I think this one might get lost.

In the UK, my doctor advised ibuprofen when I have Hasimoto flare-ups, which are linked to my hormone changes - perimeno/meno As soon as I feel my symptoms I tend to take for 2-3 days then I'm okay until the next month. I am on a dairy free (last 8 years, which has improved my symptoms)diet vegetarian diet.
