Low or high stomach acid? this is the question!

I recently spoke to my Gp saying I think I have low stomach acid rather than too much (symptoms are similar for both) I was prescribed Lansoprazole which I only taken rarely. She said she would swap me onto pantoprazole (aren’t they the same drug?) I have a stomach hernia so I have to be careful. When asked if I could try a low stomach acid med she said I would have to be seen by a gastroenterologist before I could get those meds. Am I right in thinking we are more prone to low acid with UAT?

Bicarbonate of soda test - how to take the test

Dissolve a quarter teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a little water and drink this on an empty stomach. If you have adequate levels of stomach acid, the bicarbonate of soda is neutralised and converted into gas – this means you should experience belching within 3 – 5 minutes after drinking the solution. If no belching occurs, this suggests there may be insufficient acid present.

Hi there I’ve done this test for 7 days on an empty stomach, set the timer and zero burps!

Hope you don’t mind me asking if you were offered any treatment? My Gp decides to give me Pantoprazole for a month. 2 x 20mg a day, already feel it’s a waste of time. They do like to put you off!

They are obsessed with excess acid when like you say many have too little, I don't think there is a prescription drug for low acid? I've never actually asked the GP as the advice here is so much better 🙃

Have you researched whether it is ok to take cider apple vinegar or betaine HCL?

I gather there is treatment but Gp has to refer you to a gastroenterologist as it’s almost like a t3 type prescription in the fact he has to green light it before you get it. I’ve recently bought some betaine HCL. We do have to jump some obstacles to get to our destination!

I'm thinking the betaine is going to be the better option, it is so ridiculous that modern medicine turns its nose up at the simple, natural options and needs everything to be big pharma'd with all the added nasties.

Let's hope it does the trick, I've found it helpful and recently added in TUDCA to aid bile production which certain creates the perfect 💩😁

My system has certainly been running better and I only take 1 capsule 600mg in the morning (Rapsdayci)

Betaine HCL often has a warning that it shouldn’t be taken by people with a history of stomach or duodenal ulcers. Ignore this at your peril.

I learned the hard way that low stomach acid is not always the case. An endoscopy showed multiple gastric ulcers.

This is why gastroenterologists should provide an accurate diagnosis before we embark on medication / supplements for assumed low stomach acid
