NDT advice please

Hello everyone I’m on T4/T3 combined meds for UAT. I read on here about people being on NDT, I’ve never tried it or been offered it. How do you go about trying to get a trial? It’s obviously an Endo route but are they even receptive to this as an option if you ask? I’m very curious to find out if this will improve my symptoms after all you don’t know if you don’t try! Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks

Hello Bollieforme :

NDT - Natural Desiccated Thyroid was the original and successfully used treatment for hypothyroidism for around 100 years and Big Pharma launched it's synthetic T3 and T4 treatment options on the back of NDT in around the middle of the last century and went about gaining market share by fair means or foul.

Up until around 2000 all treatment options, T3. T4 and NDT were available from your doctor - now sadly NHS doctors only have T4 and anti depressants in their box of tricks.

NDT is still meant to be available on a Named Patient Only Prescription but as a new patient finding a doctor who will treat you on the NHS with NDT is likely mission impossible.

You can go into openprescribing.net and then go into analyse -

and see by surgery and catchment area how supportive your surgery /area are - just enter the leading brand - Armour as the drug.

I had RAI thyroid ablation for Graves in 2005 and refused both T3 and NDT by my surgery and hospital in 2018 and now self medicate NDT and am much improved.

NDT contains all the same known hormones as that of the human gland - trace elements of T1. T2 and calcitonin + a measure of T3 and a measure of T4 and derived from pig thyroids dried and ground down into tablets referred to as grains.

Thyroid UK will provide you with a list of private Endocrinologists and doctors who may be willing to prescribe and/or work with NDT. You can email them and ask for the list and they'll email it to you.

virtually impossible to get NDT on NHS

Difficult but not impossible to get T3 prescribed alongside levothyroxine

Just looking at your previous post

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

This shows you were not on high enough dose levothyroxine and you were increasing levothyroxine

Have you

A) retested since …..leaving correct dose time before test

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

B) told Endo you are taking 3 x 5mcg

C) need new vitamin test results
