Roma vs Morningside - Feedback appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I'm in the situation where I may be starting a T3 trail soon (nhs). I may have no say over what I'm given, but hopefully, if I do, I'd like to start on a brand that can easily be titrated up (which made me wonder how useful roma capsules would be as they can't be split).

Plus, I'm looking at costs and hoping to keep em down (splitting 20s etc if that's acceptable to my endo, to keep my pharmacy happy).

Anywho, interested to hear of people's thoughts on best nhs options (I've seen the price lists etc from helvella - very helpful. Beyond that, what are people's preferences and reasons for them?

I don't have a know issue with lactose btw.

Many thanks,

Even though it would be cheaper for my NHS surgery to prescribe 10mcg tablets for me. They insist on prescribing 5s as my dose is written 5mcg x 2 daily. And they don't think it would be consistent to split.I have been happy on Teva and Morningside but finally settled on Morningside only.

Really? It's so weird isn't it especially when they make such a fuss about the cost. Do you manage ok on just 10mcg a day?

I actually only take 7.5mcg per day but I don't tell the surgery that as it gives me flexibility and I don't run out. And it means I split a tablet! That 7.5mcg takes my ft3 from 17% through range when on 100mcg levo only, to 72%through range on combo with the previous levo dose. Some of us only need a little.

I had a very bad reaction to Roma. Even 5mcg caused massive anxiety, which completely resolved when I swapped back to Morningside. I tried it on another occasion - exactly the same reaction. I now have ‘Morningside only’ on my Lio prescription.

Hiya, oh that sounds horrible. Was that on roma capsules or tablets?

Tablets

My story is very similar to that of Buddy195, but in my case Roma capsules.

Sounds like people generally get on better with Morningside, this is helpful. Like I said, I have no idea if I'll be able to actually sway what I get - one way or another - but really good to know. Thanks all.

I have morningside 2x10 daily they seem ok. Currently taking 150 levothyroxine aswell. Thanks to information and help here I have finally got my doctors surgery to put no teva on my notes. Thanks also to this site nd lovely knowledgeable people on here I was able to quote the recent guidance about keep changing brands. So Thank you all for being here.

Why was teva not a good fit for you, if you don't mind me asking?

Quite a number of members have found Teva levothyroxine causes them problems. Primarily, I think, stomach issues.

The suggestion is this is due to it containing mannitol but this is unproved.

However, some members find Teva levothyroxine the best they have ever received.

Clearly opinion and experience varies. There seems no good reason to avoid Teva levothyroxine unless you have had a bad experience from taking it. After all, it is often the most readily available, and can be supplied in a wider range of dosages than any other UK levothyroxine.

Teva liothyronine is not subject to the same issues at all and does not contain mannitol.

i have had both Morningside and Roma - the former costs a lot more for 5 mg tablets which is why pharmacy usually procures Roma because they bear the extra cost of Morningside brand. Initially didn't like roma capsule which was maybe set in my mind from reading comments about its excipients and it's a capsule not a tiny pill but actually realised that i was ok on it - no bad effects after all. So i don't mind which one but dont want to keep changing.

The Patient Information Leaflet for Roma capsules expressly identifies the option of removing the contents of the capsules and taking in water.

A few members found this helped - but have no idea if any have continued do this long-term, rather than avoiding Roma altogether.

Yeah, that sounds like a pain (the water thing). I like to just pop my pills n' go tbh! Wouldn't want the faff of that.

As it happens, I'm just back from the hospital. I've been given the Trail (yey!) and the hospital pharmacy have issued Morningside 2 x 10mcg pd, (with my usual T4 Accord reduced from 75 to 50mcg). I'm really pleased to have been given Morningside, but am conscious this may change if and when it gets transferred to my local surgery.

Will have to see how it all goes...

Especially as their 10 microgram tablets are the most expensive T3 tablets!
