Help and advice needed please

I took a folate tablet and had severe diarrhoea and violent sickness. I have vomited coffee grounds looking stuff, black dried blood and some dark blood. Doctor has given Lansoprazole 30mg daily. It has saccharine talc and mannitol all of which I am hypersensitive to. My heart is racing. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Did you check the ingredients before you took the supplement?

Reading previous post you take other medications, did you check for interactions before starting the folate supplement? I always use drugbank.com to check:

I checked the drugs I take and no interactions were found. Sweeteners like saccharine upset me as a kid. Talc and mannitol upset me when I took Teva levothyroxine, now only take Wockhardt. Thanks for replying.

Gosh sorry you had such bad reaction

Going to have to look at another option for improving low folate and other B vitamins

Make sure you take Lansoprazole as far away from levothyroxine as possible

Lansoprazole lowers stomach acid

You already strongly suspect you have low stomach acid

So ween back off as soon as you can

Can you tolerate any of these

Good Evening SlowDragon. I couldn’t believe the reaction either. It isn’t your fault. It is my daft Autistic/ADHD body. It has never behaved like a neurotypical person. Thanks for the folate link. I will have a good look when I feel better. I knew the link between lansaprazole and low stomach acid. I will try to get off it as soon as possible. I hope he doesn’t mean long term. As I told Seaside Susie I am sensitive to three of the ingredients. Thanks for your kind reply. This is a very steep uphill battle.

Meanwhile keep pushing on with getting dose levothyroxine increased

My blood test is due on 13th August after being on 50mcg for eight weeks. Had a blood test from Haematologist who diagnosed blood macrocytosis like you said. She wants further testing. I will hear next week and I will let you know about blood results from thyroid and haematology. Thanks for your encouragement, really appreciate it.

Causes of macrocytosis include:

Nutritional deficiencies: Your body needs nutrients, like vitamin B12 and folate (vitamin B9), to make healthy red blood cells. Your red blood cells may not develop normally if you’re not consuming enough of these nutrients or if a condition is preventing your body from absorbing them. Deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate cause macrocytic anemia.

Medications: Multiple medicines can lead to macrocytosis. The most common types include a medicine for sickle cell disease called hydroxyurea, various chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment and antiretroviral therapy (ART) for treating HIV.

Alcohol use disorder: Drinking too much alcohol can prevent your body from absorbing the nutrients needed to make healthy red blood cells.

Liver disease: Macrocytosis may be a sign of liver disease. Often — but not always — liver disease is related to consuming too much alcohol.

Hemolytic anemia: With hemolytic anemia, an underlying condition causes your red blood cells to die too soon. When this happens, your body may release reticulocytes into your bloodstream to compensate. These immature red blood cells aren’t fully formed enough to successfully transport oxygen like mature red blood cells.

Severe blood loss: Your body may release reticulocytes into your bloodstream if you lose large volumes of blood. As with hemolytic anemia, your body may release immature blood cells early to compensate for the lost blood cells.

Myelodysplastic syndrome: This type of cancer prevents your bone marrow from producing healthy red blood cells.

Hypothyroidism: People with this condition may have macrocytosis, with or without anemia.

Thank you SlowDragon. Have you in your experience come across vomiting blood. The haematologist wants me to have a liver scan. She mentioned fatty liver. I think I am a whole lot sicker than I realised.

Very common with hypothyroidism when under medicated on inadequate dose levothyroxine to have

Acid reflux

Or

Stomach ulcer (H Pylori)

Both due to LOW stomach acid

Gastritis also much more common with autoimmune hypothyroidism

If you have Hashimoto’s disease you should definitely get tested for H. pylori infection due to the strong connection.
