Hello looking for some guidance on how my readings are.

Diagnosed around 10 yrs ago. On 125 mg of Levothyroxine daily for some time.

my recent bloods are TSH 0.97 T24 17.8

I feel tired most days I am a relatively fit 67 yr old swim gym dog walking, 84 kls.

New to this forum so value any advice should my bloods be within ok range.

thanks all

Welcome to forum

Most feel well when TSH is around 1 which yours is, but more importantly the FT4 is in top 3rd of range, the active powerful hormone FT3 usually need to be over 50%.

Lab ranges vary but your FT4 may be quite high but some ranges. Please can you add ranges?

NHS do not alway test FT3 so you don’t know how well you convert Levothyroxine to FT3.

Thank you for replying.

I do not know the ranges just the above numbers. I had to arrange another blood test today as last ones mention my kidney function was on the low end? My family have noticed that my eyes are not as white as before a bit of yellow colouring in the white area. I assume this is why the kidney bloods are being redone.

They dont really go into much detail with results at my GP. I will ask more questions when this recent blood test is back.

Thanks again if you don’t mind I will post more info soon.

Contact your surgery and speak to the receptionist, not the doctor. Ask if they have online access to results, if so then register for it and you will find your results with their ranges. If they don't offer online access then ask for a print out of your results, this will include the ranges. When you have this then come back, tell us the ranges that go with these results and we will be able to help. Results without ranges are, unfortunately, meaningless, we just can't interpret them.

Great advice thank you so much. Sometimes I don’t want to bother then and when I ask I’m told they’re in the normal range!

Doctors do not offer details of results as that may results in questions, but you are entitled to results.

Ask via practice reception for a printout of test results.

Online access to GP record useful to set up if available. Before I had online access I would telephone reception in advance and explain I would like a copy of recent blood test results / or ask for blood test since xx date. Then I would say I will collect on eg “Wednesday” give them 2 or 3 days or so to print.

Staff might say they need to check if allowed if but if the results have been dealt with “read & filed on system” they can be release to you. Sometime they don’t have time to print there & then, or have staff shortages. So doing it this way with advanced notice means they have no excuses & can not refuse to provide.

You shouldn’t be questioned why you want to view them & you can refuse to give a reason but to avoid debate I would say “for my records”

Again great advice. I will do this when my results are back.

Such a helpful forum many thanks to all. 👍

Poor kidney function and low GFR linked to low Ft3 (active thyroid hormone)

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl....

Just testing TSH and Ft4 is completely inadequate

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Wow amazing post SlowDragon.

Lots to digest there. I will print this off and take it to my GP at follow up blood results. Will not accept over the phone results from receptionist and insist on seeing my GP even if I need to wait for an appointment.

Thank you so much for this. What a great forum and members I’ve stumbled on. 👏

Will not accept over the phone results from receptionist

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality some GP surgeries still do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

As you have found far too frequently only TSH and Ft4 tested

You are going to need FULL thyroid and vitamin testing

GP unlikely /unable to test Ft3

They might/should test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Thousands upon thousands U.K. thyroid patients forced to test privately to make progress

Thank you I will be asking for my full test results in future.

I’m in Scotland and so far I am only able to order meds online to pick up from our chemist. I cannot see any part in it showing my bloods results or anything medical I’ve had.

But worth asking the question to them.

Thank you again really appreciate the time and effort you e given me.

In Scotland, if they (rarely) test T3 …..they only test Total T3 not Free T3

You will need to test privately
