High cortisol
It's worth knowing what the optimal levels are for a saliva cortisol test - See example 1 in this link :

I've never worked out how to reduce the cortisol levels in the first sample of the day. Ideally you would find something that works to reduce your cortisol, and experiment with the time you take it. I would assume that many supplements or treatments would need to be taken 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 hours before your high level. But who wants to wake up every night to do that? It would be stressful in itself, and probably self-defeating because it could well raise your cortisol.
If you do a web search for "supplements to reduce cortisol" you'll find loads of links, and they vary in quality and some just tell you stupid things like "go and have fun" or "get plenty of sleep". I have never been able to sleep well and I blame my high cortisol for it.
A couple of things I've read about are Seriphos and Phosphatidylserine. Seriphos is an astronomical price these days. I tried it about 10 years ago but it made me feel even worse than I did already, although I did get a temporary reduction in my severe insomnia. I've never tried phosphatidylserine, and I don't know how well it works. It was more expensive than Seriphos when I was trying to find something that worked for me, but it seems that Seriphos is now the outrageously expensive one.
In the end I treated my own high cortisol with Swanson Holy Basil, which is usually fairly cheap. I take it at bedtime. This is the product I've been taking for years now, although I haven't bought from this website.

It usually varies a lot in price from supplier to supplier so if you ever wanted to buy it you should do lots of price comparisons every time.
The official dose for the Holy Basil was two capsules a day. In order to get any effect I was taking far more than the recommended dose, but over time I reduced and reduced my dose, until now I take just 1 capsule a day. I'm not recommending that you follow in my footsteps with the high starting dose. I was just desperate.
