New blood test results

I’ve just got my husband’s results through from Blue Horizon. He is not on any medication for hypothyroidism yet. Apart from high TSH they look ok. Any other views would be appreciated.

Can't actually see the TSH result. But the FT4 is too low. B12 is also low, should be over 550.

Can’t read TSH

What’s the result

FT4: 13.4 pmol/l (Range 12 - 22)

Ft4 only 14.00% through range

Clearly very low and shows he’s hypo

What vitamin supplements is he taking

B12 and folate far too low

Is he vegetarian or vegan?

How old is he

Is this first abnormal test ?

Request GP test testosterone and cholesterol levels too

With regard to the B12 result, according to an extract from the book, "Could it be B12?" by Sally M. Pacholok:

"We believe that the 'normal' serum B12 threshold needs to be raised from 200 pg/ml to at least 450 pg/ml because deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebrospinal fluid below 550".

"For brain and nervous system health and prevention of disease in older adults, serum B12 levels should be maintained near or above 1000 pg/ml."

Your hubby's results for B12 have the unit of measurement of pmol/L so this needs converting to pg/ml which can be done by multiplying the result by 1.355, so in this context his result is

304 x 1.355 = 411.92

So it is low but not as low as first seems.

He should consider supplementing with sublingual B12 methylcobalamin, together with a good quality B Complex, with the aim of reaching 550pg/ml (or 405pmol/L) and then stop the B12 and continue just with the B Complex which should be enough to continue to raise his level and maintain it.

It will also help improve his folate level which is poor. Folate is recommended to be at least half way through range so you're aiming for 35 plus with that range.

Popular B Complex supplements here are

Thorne Basic B - sometimes difficult to source and can be expensive

Good alternatives which provide very similar doses of active ingredients at a better price are (if any out of stock choose one of the others, the Yipmai is actually Vitablossom and the Pink Tribe is just as good):

Vitablossom or Yipmai or Pink Tribe liposomal B Complex softgels.

Vitablossom: hempoutlet.co.uk/vitablosso...

Yipmai: amazon.co.uk/Yipmai-Liposom...?

Pink Tribe: amazon.co.uk/Liposomal-Vita...
