Test results any advice!

Housemartins profile image
12 Replies

New to site which is a light in the dark believe me !Near total thyroidectomy forty years ago unmedicated.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism unrecognised since by numerous GP.S ,,normal range,,

Became really debilitating around fifteen years ago. Swelling weight gain and most other symptoms! Change of life and stress. Became unrecognizable as the same woman....other people's opinion of my body changes .Digestive problems huge and ongoing.Mobility problems core muscles rigid and stretched. Thyroid ultrasound recently on my insistence showed the small piece of thyroid left enlarged with nodules.

Recent private tests show low tsh, lower in range free T4 and lower in range freeT3 and high over range anti thyroid peroxidase, anti immunoglobulin 15. Four months to see a thyroid dept, years of no one knowing at dr s how I am so ill and getting worse. Input welcome!

Welcome

Please add results and ranges

Do you test thyroid early morning, around 9am and only drink water between waking and test

ESSENTIAL to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 too

Request GP do so

Plus high thyroid antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease, so GP should do coeliac blood test (assuming you are not already on gluten free diet)

I don,t have the actual results for these just gp assurances. I have just in the last few weeks started to take thyromax.

you mean this?

amazon.co.uk/Supplement-L-T...

You really don’t want to take anything that contains kelp or iodine. This can badly affect thyroid

Suggest you stop

Get hold of GP results for vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

Link re access

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

In reality some GP surgeries still do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

NHS only tests and treats vitamin deficiencies

eg

B12 range is typically 180-680

If your B12 result was 200 GP would say it was “fine” because it’s within range

It might be within range, but that’s far from optimal

Optimal vitamin levels are

Vitamin D at least over 80nmol

Folate near top of range

Ferritin at least over 70

Serum B12 at least over 500

Thanks for all this wise information and advice . My goodness I'm making you work hard on this. I'll take your advice about the supplement and pull all the info together. Four months to an his endo appointment. I've been looking at the private lists for Edinburgh. Thank you I have more info than ever before about this condition! Which members of my family also have as you can imagine!

come back with new post once you get vitamin results from surgery and/or new test results

High TPO antibodies normally confirms autoimmune thyroid disease, aka Hashimoto’s

FT4: 15.4 pmol/l (Range 12 - 22)

Ft4 slightly low at 34.00% through range

FT3: 4.62 pmol/l (Range 3.1 - 6.8)

Ft3 also slightly low at 41.08% through range

Very low TSH ….suggests central hypothyroidism or possibly a hot nodule in the remnant of your thyroid

Central hypothyroidism

Thanks for all of that it really hass helped to access informed people in this process. I just realised I had left out my gp parathyroid test of 3.18. I was told forty years ago that the surgeon had barely managed to save a sixth of the gland. When I read the hypothyroidism list lots of things Drs were confused by over the years made more sense!

gp parathyroid test of 3.18

Obviously result pretty meaningless without ranges

Parathyroid should always be tested together with vitamin D and Calcium at same time

not an easy test to get privately as parathyroid test itself has to be processed within 30 mins of blood draw

All things parathyroid here

parathyroid.com

If/when you have all three results from same blood test …..put results in this app to get diagnosis
