Currently awaiting lab results from blue horizon full thyroid and microbiome , not due to end of June. my mum is 90 currently on thyroxine 50mg ( was on 100 mg) she has all the symptoms that Ive read about on peoples posts on this forum , headaches, cold all the time , waking at night , acid reflux , anxiety (particularly between 7-8 am (cortisol) , dry hair , hair falling out , candida overgrowth in the mouth , poor balance/coordination , eye sight blurry, aches and pains, choking etc etc
This has been going on for three years , and we have got nowhere with her GP, they just say its old age, shes a very active 90 year old, but this had made her life a misery.
I saw a doctor on youtube talk about a hand held laser device that he reckons alleviates thyroid issues, has anyone any experience of these or infra red devices working ?
I just need something that will help before these tests come back.
Thanks to anyone who replies .

Joseph if your mum is lacking thyroid hormones then the only thing that will replace them is taking thyroid hormones orally.
It does sound as if she is on too low a dose of levo. Post the results when you get them and we will help. It would also help if you had b12, folate ferritin and vit D tested as these need to be at goo, top third of range, levels for the body to run efficiently.
I attended a GP appointment with my mum about three weeks ago and I asked the GP why she had been lowered to 50 mg , but my mum was so distraught the convo moved onto another symptom, it was a distressing meeting, I can only think they lowered it because she had slightly raised kidney function.
Joseph doctors often adjust doses based on TSH results and the fact that your mum is elderly. However when you have thyroid problems TSH doesn't always reflect the levels of your thyroid hormones. Hypo folks often need higher levels of thyroid hormones than they would have had when their thyroid was working properly. This is because the body is no longer using the hormones as efficiently. However higher but in range hormone levels mean the TSH is lower...and if the doctor doses by TSH alone then there we are symptomatic and on too low a dose.
Changes to levo doses are better in 12.5mcg or 25mcg daily and staying on the new dose for 6 -8 weeks before checking levels with a blood test.. This is more gentle on the body and gives the interlinked systems time to adjust and adapt.
If you were to increase your mum's dose slightly now, you run the risk of running out of thyroxine and may find that the dr will not issue a prescription earlier than the records show as necessary.
The patient is entitled to obtain copies of blood results so maybe if you contact the surgery you could obtain copies of her previous results. Post them on here and folks will be in a better position to advise based on results.
They dropped my nearly 80 year old mum down to 50mg a day.My mum is cold all the time and really achey but she always says its old age. I think she's being under treated and they're only testing tsh.
I think it's another way to save money. Cut the elderly medication down and tell them it's old age causing the symptoms.
I'm going to go to my mums next appointment. I think it's disgraceful how they're being treated.
I wish you luck ..I was met with a wall of indignation because I was asking too many questions ...basically the GP said the primary trust did two thyroid tests and that she was happy with the results ..I must have been to every medical dept over the last three years with the exception of endo...chasing a multitude of symptoms that most people have on this site ..I think youre right about funding, lots of doors close as you get old. My plan is now to get the full thyroid panel ..book a private endo that also works for the NHS ..get him to write to the GP and get the GP to refer back to the same endo so that we can start on an NHS path ..at the very least I'd like a scan of my mum's thyroid. It's madness having to jump through these hoops.
